Playing DVDs on laptop

    Hi,
I recently purchased a new laptop by e-machines. It is my main device for playing DVDs. The screen is, I presume, high definition and when I play older DVDs, especially black and white movies, the picture is sort of fuzzy. I understand that this is due to the high definition screen. Is there anything I can do to improve the picture quality? Or do I need to go back to my old laptop which is on its last legs?
I've googled the issue but can't find a resolution. Any of you guys have a suggestion?

    Thanks,
    Twain

What application are you using to play the movies?

I'd highly recommend trying vlc and open them up in that to see if they're any better.

Don't use any dvd playing bloatware that came with it or windows media player.

Are they fuzzy when played on any other computer or is it just the new laptop that has issues with the DVD?

    Hi,
    Thanks for your replies.

    ChinGrin,
I've tried them Windows media player and vlc player, and there is no difference.

It's really just the new laptop which has this problem, partyatmygaff - they play ok on the old laptop and my non-HD television. This is why I think the high definition screen is the problem - there is not enough "information" on the old movies to fill up the screen. It's like what happens if you zoom in on a low-resolution picture - it just looks blurry.

Well the old laptop (Unless it's incredibly old) will more than likely have near enough the same resolution as your current laptop. I don't really think it's the resolution.

Could you perhaps open up the same video on both of your laptops and take a photo of each? It could be a bad screen.

    Try updating your video drivers.

Install this and tell us what graphics card you have.

    Intel (R) HT Graphics

The old laptop was bought in 2007
