Hi all I have 00 Mitsubshi Lancer and it failed the NCT today for the brake lines/hoses which is corroded. I had a pre NCT test done with Advance Pitstop last Saturday and am just asking should they have picked up on this? Also could anyone tell me if this is a big job to put right and how much would it cost, thanks

It should have been found on your pre-nct-test, imo.

How much it costs to put right depends on the labour involved.
If its the brake hoses (the black rubber type) that have cracks, and need replacing, the labour costs will not be too bad I'd imagine.
If the steel brake lines need replacing, there may be a lot more labour involved, as the brake lines have to traverse areas like the back axle, fuel tank, etc, which may involve some stripping down to allow refitting the new ones.
Theres also the time needed to bleed the brakes.

Yes they should have picked it up as brake lines/hoses as they're listed as part of the pre-NCT check. However, sometimes the condition of the pipe/hose is subjective and it's acceptability can depend on the mechanic/tester to some extent. It's not unheard of testers failing brake pipes because of harmless light surface corrosion or even dirt.

Bring it back to Advance, they may fix it free if they can't justify why they overlooked telling you you'd fail...

I know it's closing the stable door at this stage but paying someone to do a pre nct on a 00 car is a pointless exercise. The test is only €50 and then you know exactly where you stand.

As for the situation with the garage, if that happened in our place we would charge for the repair but pay for the retest for the customer. But I would have recommended the OP to just bring the car in for the test rather than have us check it first.

Cost me around €250 to have the steel brake lines replaced on my bmw E46 last year. Bitch of a job to do..the mechanic had to drop the fuel tank and rear subframe to do it,iirc.

Edit:Ohh..and fwiw...mine managed to pass the NCT with the corrode lines! Only spotted them myself when the car was on a lift a few days after the test.

If a garage replaces something and it fails then NCT then they must pay.

They should have spotted it yes, but if they have not fixed anything then its unreasonable to expect them to repair it FOC.

As said, brake line corrosion is a very subjective fail and is a bone of contention between many garages and the NCT.

I agree 100% with you on going for the NCT test, I have always done this, but this time I decided aganist as I knew of a couple of issues that it would fail for. Thanks for the responses and I will Advance a ring tomorrow.

Not sure about your local Advance...but the one in Athlone don't replace the steel lines (at least they didn't when I wanted mine done last year).

Especially when the pre-NCT check was free too!
