valve under kitchen sink - is it correct?

I noticed that one valve under my sink (the red one in the middle) is perpendicular to the pipe and all the others are all parallel to the pipes. I suspect it's been like that for a long time but I never noticed it. It seems to control hot water that seems to go to my washing machine.

Is it currently open or closed? If closed all that time in error, what does that mean? Has my washing machine not been working properly all that time?

I have posted a pic. Thanks.

If your washing machine is new-ish it may only need a cold supply. You can check you manual to save you pulling it out If that is the case, the hose should be removed and a blank cap placed on the valve

If your machine has both hot and cold your machine will use your hot water on programes above 60o, as yours is in the off position it will only use your cold and the machine will heat it.

So if the valve is off, should it be on???

Do you have plenty of hot water ??

If you decide to open the valve the machine will use your hot water, not so good if you dont have a lot but if it takes your hot water then it doesnt have to heat it, your machine will wash and wash until the tempreture has been reached, that can add anything upto 45min to the lenght of a wash, so, do you do many 60o+ washes.

No, wouldn't have plenty of hot water, only when central heating is on at night time. So, from what you are all saying, as it is a not-that-old ie 6 yrs, best leave hot water valve as is ie OFF! Cheers.
