Depends on the car. Nothing much to it. On my car there is a bung in the side of the gearbox that usually takes a special adapter or star Allen key. Mine fit a t55 torx bit. All I had to do was fill it with oil until it came out. But my car is old. It shouldn't be much more complicated than that

Depends on your ride, there are manufacturer recommendations for all models. Usually they don`t need to be changed often. On some models there is even a lifetime oil inside the box.

Changing the oil can be simple on some models while pain on others. ;)

lot of car manufacturers (eg Audi) say their boxes are "sealed for life", which contradicts the manufacturers of the gearbox (eg ZF who Audi would buy the gearbox off) who will have a regular service interval. There is an cheap way to learn that lesson, and an expensive way (I paid 2.3k GBP in March :()

More than likely wouldn't need to be done. I only changed my gearbox oil recently...my car is 14 years old

I hope you used Honda MTF. 10w40 is a recepie for disaster on a Honda box.

To my complete dismay I pulled out 10W40 from it! I was shocked!

Used Motul 75W90, massive massive difference!

10w40 was originally speced for lots of Honda boxes. They developed MTF due to premature wear. My Y1 box was crunching in 3rd when I bought it. First thing I did was to change the oil for MTF. 6 years and 60,000km later and it's still perfect...which reminds me it's about due for a change again.

For the benefit of those that mightn't already know....It's important to keep in mind that the SAE specs for oil viscosity are different for engine and gearbox oil. Ie 10w40 gearbox oil is different to 10w40 engine oil. Often people think gearbox oil needs to be "thicker" and that's not necessarily the case.

I have a PDF of the original workshop manual somewhere. I'm 99% sure it was non-synth engine oil that was originally speced.

Fwiw, Land Rover MTF is the same spec and probably cheaper than buying from Honda.

Ford don't list a schedule for gear oil changes and gearbox trouble wouldn't be something that the focus is known for so you shouldn't have any issues.

    I presume its manual?

Audi should be criticised for that "Sealed for life" shít. "Sealed for the life of our pathetic warranty" is more accurate. I'd change the oil in them before 100k miles, which is long before the "life" of a gearbox I'd hope!

Changing my gearbox oil for the third time soon, using Millers CRX 75w-90 NT. 145k up and gear box is perfect.

IME for VAG cars, it's worth using the OEM transmission lubricants. Switched from an aftermarket 75W90 to VW G060 in my Passat last year and the shifting was so much better. The VW oil was also less than half the price of the aftermarket.

Lately my clk autobox has started to jerk the odd time when changing gear, i believe they are also "Sealed for life" and there is no dipstick to check levels.

I have seen people online recommend doing it at 80000 miles, which is bang on what mine is, should i defiantly go about getting it done?

I'd say that just merc trying to look good in saying the auto box doesn't have to be serviced. Pretty much every other autobox fitted to any other brand have schedules for oil/filter changes
