Just a quick enquiry on weapons.

Can any aul person just go into a shop and buy swords, sai, chucks etc...
Or do ye need a license of some sort to purchase these weapons?

Same with online sales, do customs stop them or would there be any problem with getting weapons online?

Just curiousity here as I've been doing Jiu-Jitsu since June and there will be weapons training down the line, which I honestly can't wait to learn. Obviously I'll be getting the wooden and rubber weapons to learn and train with, but at some point I'd like to invest in the real thing.

There's restrictions on some weapons being for sale, katana (see herehttp://www.iaido.ie/node/155), balisong, machete etc.

Other weapons are legal for sale and ownership, you don't need a license for them.

Firearms and offensive weapons act is the relevant legislation for prohibited weapons

Basically it's sound to import them if they're authentic pieces or made in a traditional manner... Ie not stainless steel brittle pieces of sh1t more dangerous to the user than anyone else. As long as younhave a reason, and practicing martial arts is a reason. Mind you certain weapons are banned such as sword canes (inc zatoichi style) as they conceal what they are.) nun chucks and butterfly knives the baligong version too since they became popular with bruce lee wannabe fools in the 70s-80s.
You do need to transport them to and fro training wrapped in 2 bags- so as they are not easily accessible.
However on the plus side as the law now allows you to defend your home with what you deem necessary force, and not to back down, well suddenly they have returned to a practical method! ;-)

    Cheers for the info lads.
Looks like I'll be in the market soon enough so.

What weapons has members of this forum got?

Maybe turn this thread into a user weapons pics thread?

Have you asked your teacher? Presuming he/she has their own weapons, teaches how to use them, has other students with them.... they'd be in a better position to know than anyone.

Very true man, you see I was out injured the last two weeks... so I was getting withdrawal symtoms recovering and needed to keep the mind occupied. I'm going back tonight so I'll be on a fact finding mission then.
