    Would it increase brand awareness?
    Would it sell more cars?

Audi are one of Bayern's sponsors AFAIK. They sponsor the Audi Cup held in the Allianz Arena for the past few years.

Ooops...should have said VAG sponsor Bayern. They also sponsor Wolfsburg which is an obvious choice. It is a strange one.

Of all the large companys in Munich, why should BMW be the ones to have to sponsor the team?

The real local club is 1860 Munich anyway :D

Also I reckon BMW see themselves a few notches above sponsoring football:
BMW has sponsored various European golf events such as the PGA Championship at Wentworth, the BMW Italian Open and the BMW International Open in Germany

slightly more posh clientel, see :D:D:D
