Established studio for portraits

A friend is looking for a few family portraits, up to about 20 people.

It's too many for me to attempt so he asked me to check out established studios that he can look into for prices for prices. As I said he want's established studio so that rules out many people that I would have suggested to him.

    Any suggestions?

I know Gavin's on Dorset Street is one...

Seen a great photograph recently in a school. Group portrait of all the teachers and staff. Really, really wide photo (about 40-50 people in there).

They were all photographed two or three at a time with a 6 foot wide white backdrop, and the photographer put all the photos together at the end to make the panoramic shot.

Would that be an option? Cos that'd mean that pretty much any studio could take on the job?

Not sure what an 'established' studio is...

Well what he is looking for is an established studio with a good record of doing good portraits.

I've also seen some of those photoshopped group shots but not as good as the one you've described.

He's looking to do a present for his folks and wants to see if there are options for getting the digital images as well.

I think with around 20 people including kids one main group is the only option.

The guys in the picture rooms beside the Clarence hotel are very good and reasonable. Disclaimer: they are buddies of mine but they are good. Worth giving them a bell at least.

Oh I see what you mean by 'established' now, alright, but I think most studios would generally have a good track record (can't imagine what a bad studio shot would look like these days).

If you're dealing with 20 people i think you'll be looking at a studio dropping people in (like with my aforementioned teachers example). A studio would have to be specialising in family portraiture or just have massive amounts of space to have a backdrop wide enough to deal with 20 people.

That said, I don't really know for sure. I've only seen a small handful of studios in real life (not online, and such), so i can't say what the 'norm' is for studios (though all the ones I were in, the backdrop was about 6-8 foot wide on average).

Best of luck with getting sorted with this. :)
