Anyone know if there is a national scheme which organises the safe disposal of these? Thanks!

Your local recycling centre should take them:

I'm not sure if thats what the OP was looking for

Our local recycling just smashes all light compact fluorescent tubes in to a big plastic box which releases any gases and chemicals in the tubes to the atmosphere - not sure if thats an issue or not?

I think it's WEE Ireland look after the disposal of old fluorescent tubes etc... If you bring your old tubes with you when you're buying the new ones then the wholesaler will take the old ones and dispose of them properly.

If you're looking for information about how the collectors dispose of them, as opposed to how you dispose of them, you will have to ask the EPA or look up their website.

I wouldn't trust anecdotes about what happens to collected recyclables, as we've already had issues with people thinking everything is dumped at sea or sent to China.

Fair point, will contact the EPA directly about that. Thanks.

Probably a lot of that going on, no doubt they save any metals though to use in other material.
