Left a laptop (sony vaio) in for repair,as the screen was cracked and needed replacement. Got it back today ,but the on/off wireless button is not working, and I cannot connect to the internet.
It was working before I send it for repair.
Could this happen by accident when replacing the screen?.I will be going back to the repair shop tomorrow.

    Thanking you in advance.

Get back on to them. Sounds like they have made mistake, when they were taking it apart to replace the screen.

I wouldn't say you were conned, it was probably a genuine error. Removing the screen often requires disconnecting the cables to the wi-fi adapter, however I can't see why the wireless switch isn't working.

The wireless antena in a lot of laptops now is up along the sides of the screen, it could have been disconnected and not reconnected, the wireless switch wouldn't be working because the laptop doesn't see any wireless device.

    Hello

It is possible that by chance it just stopped working at this time and some device may have been due to fail anyway

At one time I fixed a PC for a person and I checked everything was working ok, a week later I got a call to say USB was not working and it was before I carried out the reinstall. I explained I did a test print on the printer which used the USB connection so it was working. It was a genuine call and they believed I was resonsible, once I explained the printer was working the excepted the problem was not becuase of the work I carried out

    Best of luck with laptop

You haven't been conned at all, its a genuine mistake to make. As already mentioned the wireless wires are located on the inside of the screen - they just need to be reconnected. I wouldn't give the repair shop a hard time over it, just ask them to check that the wires are connected properly. If they won't do it, I will! :D

I had a VAIO before. The external wireless switch slides on off. Behind the external wireless switch is a microswitch. If the external switch is not lined up with the microswitch behind it when the palmrest is replaced it will not grip the microswitch to slide it.

I just replaced the screen on on my FS amilo laptop myself. Really easy to do with the help of a youtube video or two.

I noticed the wifi cable on mine and hit off it a few times so I would think it's come loose or needs reconnecting. You could google it and try yourself. Really is very easy to do. :)

I wouldnt imagine the repair shop tried to con you, sure they'll have to fix it for you free of charge, unless you broke it when the screen cracked, was the laptop dropped?

Don't go opening it or anything like some of the pervious posters have said. Bring it back to the shop and see what they have to say about it first.

They'll fix it while you wait. Or they should anyway, unless they accidentally spliced the cable.
Most newer laptops, replacing the wifi cable shouldn't take more then 5 - 10 minutes.

I did see once, someone replacing the screen, had the screen brackets pinned down on the wifi cable, and caused it to fray, eventually break.
It was a Dell, where the cable came out the corner, and ran in to the middle of the power board. When we saw it, pretty much everyone there agreed it was easy to do, and that any of us could have done it.

By the way, how much was the repair and what size is the screen?

I'm sure they will fix it if you bring it back to them ;-) they probably just didn't reconnect the antennae wires properly - an easy mistake to make

No not dropped,my son closed the laptop with a pen trapped between the screen and keyboard, that cracked it.
The on/of button was still working after the screen broke, before the repair.

Its all sorted now,guy in the shop fixed it.Thanks all.
