My instiron 530 has crashed. I'm trying to boot it with the DVD but keeps going to a blank screen where I can do nothing only turn off the computer holding down the power button. What do I need to do to get my computer on again. ( this all started with the bios not reading the hard drive so selected cd drive to load)

what happens if you try to boot it from HDD?
what DVD are you trying to boot with? Have you got another bootable dvd?

When I start it and leave it it has " Error loading operating system _ [with the underscore flashing]
The DVD I'm using is reinstalation DVD , Windows Vista Home Basic 32BIT
When I leave the DVD load it shows that windows is loading files then the Microsoft corporation loading screen shows, this follows with blank screen forever and have to hold down power button to turn off again.

You will really need to try another disk (free linux live cd) just to see if it is able to boot anything else and therefore exclude hardware problem.
