    Mitsu Colt 1.1litre 3 cylinder....

Have this car since july... noticed on a cold start that the rpm is higher about 1400-1500rpm for a few minutes until the engine warms up..

Obviously this is more noticable now during the winter with the colder mornings.

Is this a standard thing to warm up the engine??

Havent really noticed it on other cars i had although they had bigger engines!!

Normal operation, the colder it is outside, the higher the initial cold start idle, up to a set max. As long as warm idle speed goes down to what you stated after couple of minutes or less, it's OK.

In the old days you used to have to do this yourself ...light foot on the gas and a gentle pull on the choke (or heavy foot and full pull, depending on temperature)

These new fangled electronics are killing all the skillz :D

There's a similar delay program on my E38 for the autobox. When pulling off from cold, it prefers to rev the engine higher than to change up a gear until the transmission fluid reaches 50 celsius, the car has been running for over 30 seconds, or speed exceeds 20mph.

Which is a bit of a pain when leaving the house in the morning as it takes me 30 seconds to get out of my estate so the gearbox is right on the verge of changing gear, but doesn't. Just a niggly thing that annoys me. :)

Some cars really have a very noticeable high idle while others not so much. No doubt your car is performing as designed.
