Hi all, Ive come across a 1999 Mitsubishi shogun 2.8 diesel lwb which im to have a look at 2moro, its in good condition, 146k on the clock , Its got a short test which is up in February next but price seems not bad at €1350ono.
Anyway is there any particular things I need to look out when checking this vehicle,

check for oil leaks around the rocker cover especially at the back(they call them half moons, very prone to leaking). Also check for oil leaks on the sump, if it is leaking its a big job as the cross member and the front diff will need to be removed to get the sump down. Run through the 4x4 selections and make sure the gear lights come on and stay on and the center diff light doesn't flash amber. The 2.8's have a timing chain so really no worries there but they do suffer from head gasket/ failures. Have a good test over some bumps to test the shocks, they have the 3 stage adjustable shocks that are very pricey to change but i believe you can put standard non adjustable ones in. If you can bring some tools with you and ask if you can take the intake pipe off to the turbo to check for play in the shaft, they give a bit of trouble. On my 95 a had a it of trouble with the water jets for windscreen, plugged up every now and then, but thats just little things.

Pay close attention to the ladder frame, shoguns are uk models and spray from salt combined with mud caked on eats the metal. Get underneath and poke with a screwdriver.

I think only the diamond option pack (DOP) 2.8's had the adjustable shocks in the uk.

First thing, non negotiable, is that you insist that the vehicle is absolutely cold when you arrive to inspect it.

The 2.8 sufferes from a seal failure in the injection pump, its a reasonably straightforward fix for a mechanic but it does take time and hence will cost to sort out.

The symptoms are straightforward, it will start fine, it may start to hunt after a minute or two, better still, bring it for a drive, after a mile, stop, let it idle for a minute and then proceed. If the seal is gone it will stall and take an age to start.

Next issue is the cylinder head, these have ceramic pre-combustion chamber inserts so they can't be skimmed - ie if it overheats you need a new head.

Make sure the cooling system is OK, especially if its got air con, muck gets trapped between the two rads and degrades the coolant rad performance. Give it a balls to the wall run on a motorway or such and watch out for overheating.

Timing chains are another weak point, at some stage it will need to be changed. Split link chains are available now which make the job easier. Timing chain RIP is signalled by a chuffing sound at idle.

New rocker gasket set will sort aforementioned oil weep, no big deal.

4x4 system is good, just make sure there are no flashing lights as you try the various settings, good haggling point, usually a quick fix item.

Sunroof versions prone to rotting around the roof.

    Decent vehicle, good luck.

Wise decision, who know's what damage is done if it's been over heated too much. There is lots out there for little money

i think thats only for new vehicles, vat has already been paid at full rate so there shouldn't be a problem, but i'm not 100% sure

I'm pretty sure you are right on that, regulations apply only to imports. If it's already registered here you can still do it.
