I've been looking into these lately, everyone I've talked to has told me stay well clear. Apparently they kompressor engine gives alot of trouble.

Plus, the value for money in an E39 5 series seems to be a lot better.

How much were you looking at spending on a 03 E class?

i dont think you will get one for 4k, they seem to be going for around 5.5k-7.5k for a 03 or 04 model

I was thinking around the same but they seem to be holding their value alot better than the likes of these, which come with a 6 pot :)

is high mileage a worry for the 520i LM cos they all seem to have 100k+

I wouldn't considered 10k miles a year on a car like that high mileage?

Nope, not on the e39, they like the odd bit of suspension or coolant system admittedly but the take miles well, as LM says its not high anyway :)

i believe the kompressor engines up to 2005 can give some trouble but reliability improved considerably from then on.

i have a 2005 clk 200 komp and find it great. mixed driving about 33mpg - up to 42mpg on motorway and 20-25mpg in city traffic.

i think its a great engine with adequate power but my previous car was a 1.4 focus so what do i know...

i agree its not that high but my question was more aimed at suspension components etc. needing a change and it being costly for a youngin like myself to fix

I actually work on these cars everyday of the week.theres Afew common problems il tell u about witch people have not said.firstly around 90k the timing chain needs replacing.not a bad job in and out in one day for someone who knows them well.bottom ball joints give savage trouble and the top ball joints on the top arm.also the front shocks give trouble and lastly on the automatic the gear box electric plug leaks.oh and on the engine there's a vacuum pipe on the manifold witch gives trouble.as I've stated I do these problems day in day out as I work in a Mercedes specalist

What about the coolant entering the automatic gearbox by the radiator which is also a transmission cooler, basically writing off the auto gearbox? Make sure that it is not an affected one as it is a very common problem apparently.

How much for a suspension overhaul and for a new chain?

I believe these cars had a problem with sbc,a new brake by wire system merc introduced at launch, the e class had a few recalls as well.

@ Lomb the timing chain would prob cost in the region of 700e that includes parts and labour also it depends on what needs doin on the suspension top ball joints are about 60e each bottom ball joints are near the same price.the shocks on the other hand are a little more expensive.if u need any further info u can contact me

New chain 2800euro, chain jumped off the cogs? dont ask how as i still cant figure it out.
SBC sensors on front and back seats went, 390euro.
Ball joints bushes and springs gone on front suspension, 1200euro.
Oil sensor and tail lights, 125euro.
    Service D 600euro.
Front door locks unable to find the shut position(they just banging up and down when auto locking), 140 each side. 300euro.

overall the reliabilty sucks, once the car is over 5 yrs old, they start falling apart and cost to much to bother.
    Iv had 4 e200's, a 98, a 00 a 03 and a 05 and they all gave trouble.

I had E200 Kompressor '00 and consumption was the best I've got from all 2liter I have owned previously. Engine started to develop some rattle shortly before selling, probably chain. Noticed oil spots on the ground whenever my car was parked. Engine oil was on level though. Other than that it was a lovely comfortable car that was rusting away within days. :D

I have one for the last 4 years. It is a 2004 200k with 120,000 mls. I have had the master brake cylinder replaced (under warranty) and a track rod end. Has been a fantastic car and very reliable. One of the most comfortable cars I have owned. The secret to reliabilty is regular servicing and USE the expensive synthetic oil!

I have had a Lancia Thema (great but will break ur heart), an E200 petrol (very reliable and comfortable but drank petrol), an opel omega ( best forgotten) but the 200K has been the best. I hope to drive it for many more years.

    My bro has a 2005 W211 E220 komp 1.8

He's got 100k miles on it and it's a reasonably reliable runner.

However, I am doing the servicing and have had to replace an upper control arm and bypass the passenger seat pads (which is an expensive delaership fix).

I think he has a developing problem with the auto transmission (some leaked coolant into the transmission).

And it will need lower control arms doing soon - they look like expensive parts.

My e200 sport 2006 has been up to now reasonable to run. That was until yesterday!!!!!!!!!!

    Went in for service. 58,000mls.

I knew there was a ball joint gone. but was not expecting the following.

Two ball joints, pads all round, front disks, service. €780.00

Here's where it get expensive, gear cogs on camshaft and timing chain. €1500,00 plus!!!!!

I don't think I will be purchasing another one.
