Diesel or Kerosen in boiler (based in data included)

    OK short story is I found a place near Enniskillen that has red diesel at €0.87 and Kerosene at €0.75.

    I currently have the boiler set up to use green diesel. Should I switch it to Kerosene given the price difference?

    Does anybody have any idea of rough efficiently figures for a boiler running diesel vs Kerosene?

    I have rough figures guestimated from data on Wikipedia that would indicate the ideal heating obtained (assuming 100% efficiency) per litre of fuel will be 41.22 MJ/€ for diesel and 45.69 MJ/€ for Kerosene. This would indicate I should switch, unless there is a vast difference in the efficiencies at which they burn.... It's late so i could have easily miscalculated also!

    I know kerosene also burns cleaner which would mean easier maintenance.

    P.S. my lack of html knowledge let me down and I couldn't put a table together on this so took a screen shot from excel.. but that's a post for another forum!

    6 weeks ago heading for Dublin i stopped at the appealing sign that read 1.39/lt for diesel, only notice some time later the EMC warning light.

    Your boiler doesnt have a EMC to warn you of what you bought, put it in! but get someone with a flue gas anyliser to check and adjust it to what it can possble maxed eff to, and check it wont kill you or anyone passing it.

    You have done plenty of home-work. With the price difference, go for the kerosene - I did, without doing the sums. Usually diesel was cheaper, but not now, here in Kerry.

    If you chaqnge fuel from Class D to a C2 fuel you will need a nozzle change and pump pressure adjustment, dont just change the fuel

    Hi i would you have a phone no for that place near Enniskillen would they deliver to sligo??? got a price from sligo fuels for Kerosene and its 95cent or 850euro for a thousand litres.

    Its 048 67748165. As far as I know they don't do delivery. We got a 500L tank on donedeal last year for about €50 (had a search there but couldn't see one) and a pump from amazon that works off a drill. I could start a little nixer delivering fuel ;-) we have a berlingo to put in the van.... you'd save €100 on 500L vs the price ur getting though, drill pump was about £20 so you'd cover ur captial costs with the saving from the first fill!

    Ah right knew about pressure thing, didn't know about nozzle.... any idea about the ball park?

    Be careful its against the law to carry diesel in an unbunded tank, heard of a gent who had his van impounded north of the border (PSNI) while carrying 750 litres, he had to get a bunded bowser (not easy to find) especially as the first bowser he arrived with wasn't bunded and transfer the diesel from the tank in the van as well as pay a fixed penalty before the van was released.

    Even if he keeps crossing the border it will take a while before he breaks even let alone makes any savings.

    didn't know that about having to have a bunded bowser! Its that the law both sides of the border?

    Think the regulations are E.U. wide to cover transport of dangerous substances try this link

    Looks like there is lots of laws that can be broken to maybe save €100.00 per 500 litres nothing mentioned about fuel used to collect and deliver, blow a tyre and not much profit left?

    I don't use oil but even if I did I reckon I'd let the tanker driver have his cut for the delivery from what I see they earn every cent.
