I was looking at some laptops today, mainly the ultra portable laptops, dont feel the need for those massive 15.6" + screens.

a lot had AMD APU processors in them, never heard of them before, are they decent.

i know the i3 etc are meant to be very good would the APU be along the lines of that.

also what is the new i3 processor thats out as i understand that the new generation is much better then the older generation i3

I don't know how the APU's stack up against Intel's Sandybridge CPU's but I don't think they are aimed at the same target market.
The APU is a CPU & a GPU combined into one chip so it gives a good overall performance.
Good for multimedia use and some light gaming.

I don't see any of AMD's APU's on the CPU benchmark list so I can't give much help as to which would be the most powerful.
My guess would be the Intel Core i 2xxx would be the better.

As regards the Intel CPU's your right, the new gen are better than the first gen Core i series.
The current gen is codenamed "Sandybridge" and you can identify a sandybridge processor by it's name,
    Intel Core i3 2310M
    Intel Core i5 2430M
    Intel Core i7 2670QM
See they all have a four digit identifier beginning with 2 the last gen Core i series only have a 3 digit identifier, so it's easy to spot which is which :)

thanks, i was wondering alright a lot of the ones on the net seem to be i3 3xx and i was looking in pc world today and they had a few i3 2xxx, assuming the likes of pc world generally try to rip you off i presumed the 13 3xx were the newer ones.

still seems to be a lot of crap laptops floating around out there

Generally speaking all AMD processors are weaker in both the CPU and integrated GPU side of things, relative to their Intel counterparts. The only advantage AMD have is the fact that laptops with their APU's in them are generally cheaper than intel ones.

Oh and yes, the newer intel processors are the i3,i5,i7 2xxx. The main advantage over the older i3-350m for example, being lower power consumption (so it runs cooler and longer) and a better integrated graphics card.
