    What's AIS?

Active Isolated Stretching, using an outside force like a towel or a rope to increase and hold a stretch. It is in theory a variation of static stretching called passive stretching where again you use an outside force to control a stretch. It is a great form of stretching but if you want the ultimate gain you should look into PNF stretching, you should also check out Self Myofascial Release Exercises to work in tandem with your flexibility.

OK then yes I have used AIS but only when injured as instructed by my physical therapist.

hiya - have you checked out fascial stretching (as opposed to myofascial release methods). I found it amazing for runners knee. it is how you described - assisted stretching, but a therapist does it for you - so you get to relax completely, even fall asleep if you like. you feel amazing afterwards!

Ger Hartmann is a big advocate of AIS. If you google him and AIS you'll find a document with some stretches in it.
