octavia fuel problem

    hi guys,
    i have a 1.9 octavia '09 with just over 60,000 km. up to a couple of days ago i was getting 60mpg. this was checked frequently by filling to the neck and calculating.
    my problem started the other nite on the m 50 when i saw black smoke coming from the exhaust. i brought it in for a service the following day and discovered the fuel filter was full of black gunge in the bottom. since then i only manage around 35 -40 mpg, even though it has had an oil and filter and fuel filter changed.

    any ideas would be appreciated thanks.
