    The number is the GROSS external debt our large financial sector (especially corporate treasury functions) has a significant effect on this number a net number would give a more accurate picture of the real situation.

    I do not understand the foreign dept. Did the 1.4tr enter this country? If it did where is it? :D

    It counts things like the IFSC and the "banks" there. It hugely inflates both the inflow and outflow of funds into the country. It doesn't really affect the domestic economy other than being a nice little tax earner for the Government.

    The 1.4 trillion figure would include the debts of any company headquartered here for tax purposes. It's not Irish debt per say, but it is owed by Irish based companies.

    There would have been corporation tax paid on any profits made by the companies involved.

    Only in the same sense that Jupiter's gravity is scary - it's a scary thing to contemplate, but it's entirely meaningless to your daily life (and largely theoretical).
