Have a 13" MBP slightly over a year old. Recently I've been seeing this herringbone pattern of yellow or green squares carpet across the screen when I've been opening some PDFs or doing anything slightly intensive (photoshop, illustrator etc.). Worried that it's my card giving it up.

If this happens, can I get it fixed or is the laptop dead? More importantly for now, will I be able to access the HD at all to back up?

    Cheers

Check when your MBP was manufactured... to make sure it's not a 2008 model. The good news is that if it is you'll get the repair free as there is a known issue with Nvidia cards.

No it's 2010. I can get it repaired if it goes though can I?

It's repairable sure, but you're looking at a logic board replacement and out of warranty that might be expensive.

Take it back to whoever you bought it from (Apple I assume) and quote the Sale of Goods Act to them. If they don't cooperate, lodge it with the small claims court.

I thought the Sales of Good Act only applies is something is inherently faulty? Sometimes things go wrong outside of warranty...

I think it's more to do with reasonable life expectancy of goods. If you pay over a thousand euro for a product you would reasonably expect to get more than a years use from it !

Sounds ominous. Your mac comes with a disc which includes a hardware test. Insert it, reboot machine, press 'D' before the boot music plays and run the test.

That said my iMac had problems with the screen after six months and Apple replaced the screen for me without issue. Took a week in total.

I don't have access to that CD, is there any test I can download or anything?
