At risk of sounding really dense...is there any other way to use the sensor bar other than with batteries? Is there a mains plug in version? I am demented with batteries being wasted leaving stuff on and when I got rechargeable no-one remembered to charge them so never available when they were wanted.

The sensor bar that comes with a wii, is wired. It goes into the back of the wii, widely available.

The sensor bar doesn't run on batteries. It's connected to the wii and draws power from the wii.

There are some third party sensor bars that run on batteries but the stock Nintendo one is powered by the Wii itself.

Is the OP not refering to the Wii remote?? As far as I know you can purchase rechargable one.

    Could be.

This would suit if that's the case.
