Small v Big Organisations

Not the most original thread name I know but...

I’d like to get people’s thoughts on this.
I feel that the emphasis in accountancy careers and exams is very biased towards bigger organisations (Big 4 included obviously).

Since the percentage of small companies In Ireland is roughly 80% (this is a 2004 figure so I’m open to correction) I feel people who work in smaller companies are not represented as well as their other colleagues. Even when I was doing my ACCA exams, the focus was all on larger organisations to a certain extent, elements which included group accounting, transfer pricing etc etc.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I understand that they have to give you the grounding if you find yourself (lucky/unlucky) working for a bigger organization but I felt there wasn’t enough time dedicated to work that goes on in smaller practices. I know it’s a cliché but we all know someone who knows someone else working in accountancy and they can’t do a simple bank rec. (my example is a friend working in audit in E&Y in Dublin).

Even on jobs websites, the focus is on Multinationals, moving to Multinationals from Big 4, experience with SAP etc.
On a personal level, I find it very unfair that someone who has studied and trained with smaller companies / practices are kind of left ‘out of the loop’ (the perception I get is that if you have worked for a small company, you do not have:

    • The experience
    • The expertise
    • The ability to adapt in bigger companies

Recently I have been trying to move from my current employment (we are a SMALL practice, 4 people) as I have gotten as much experience as I need here and unfortunately I am still on my crap trainee salary (qualified earlier this year). I have found it very frustrating recently as every job I apply for seems to want bigger company experience and/or industry experience (SAP).

I’m at a loss as to what my next move is and it’s not making me feel too good.
