I have a mac pro so was thinking of starting to play some games on it, I am currently looking for a controller, but also just wanted to know is a mac a good platform for gaming on?

I sold my xbox and wii a while back and now have really started to feel the effects of not having video games in my life, need to take up a casual strategy game like warcraft or starcraft and a shooter like COD to keep my sanity, any suggestions?

I game a lot on my MBP. I use steam and play portal/team fortress 2/left4dead etc.. Not all steam games are available on mac but must of the top games are. I find games run really well on the MBP. Most 'recommended' settings are maxed out and it never stutters. You might want to run a fan controller because macs have a tendanecy to run very hot before the fans kick in. I use SMC Fan Control

I use the keyboard and mouse. Can't beat it for shooters in my opinon. I've never used a controller with my mac so can't help you out there. Try keyboard and mouse and see what you think. You'd be surprised.

What kind of specs do you need to run steam on a mac?

    Steam wrote:
Intel Mac, OS X version Leopard 10.5.8, Snow Leopard 10.6.3, or later.
    Two-button mouse strongly recommended

The specs for individual games may vary and the state of OSX OpenGL drivers means you would still get better performance booting directly into Windows if you really care. (I don't!!)

I got COD, COD2 and COD4 from the app store as well as the orange box (i think?) from steam. Not a huge outlay and enough to keep you occupied for a wee while.

the xbox 360 controller and receiver works well on my MBP. I use it for emulators and have no problem

Bootcamp and gaming through Windows is superior, generally. Unless you like being stuck with Indie games and the odd big ticket title. Way too much stuff isn't ported over.

It's better than it was thanks to Steamplay, the limiting factor is more the use of mobile chipsets even in desktop Macs and generally lousy drivers and OpenGL implementations.
