Wedding after Divorce

Jus thought I'd share my tale of woes... My partner is previously married - civil ceremony here in Ireland, followed by a religious ceremony in Israel where he was (10 years later) divorced. Came home and 8 years later we're together and want to get married.

Now the first problem was partly brought on by his own lack of foresight - or maybe a thought the he would never go through this again... But he never got his divorce papers handed to him in the first place - 1. he simply didn't want to pay another fee, 2. he didn't think he'd need them in the future... So he had to go all the way back to Israel to the actual court where he was divorced and pick them up. He could order them over the phone as the fee was still outstanding and they don't take checks or wire transfers from Ireland .

The second problem is his birth cert. He was born in the States. So we went to the registrar and the birth cert he had didn't have the necessary stamp, so we had to order that from the States - thankfully they will take payment from Ireland. -Although on that note, how many people have carefully looked at their birth cert. The American one is so detailed it's unreal. It details all the births and terminations the mother has had up to that birth. So apparently he had/has an older sibling...? He hasn't had a chance to talk to his mum yet about that though.

And now this latest problem. The office that they sent his divorce papers to to say that "yes, these are his divorce papers" wouldn't accept them. No real reason in the letter as to why, simply that they couldn't guarantee that his divorce was legitimate in Ireland. Huh? Have to say he's more than a bit p*ssed off. Although he saw the funnier side of it later, seeing as how, if it wasn't legit, then it makes his ex a bigamist...

But it still means that he has to first ring the registrar and the other office and ask them to double check - because it's probably only because they don't recognise the format of the divorce papers - and if that doesn't work, he has to go to court to get them to put in writing that they accept that he's divorced.

No idea what to do if both of those failed. Though, he did mention last night that if we were married in Israel they would have to recognise it.

Not sure how I'd feel about that... :o

Any similiar tale of woes? Come on, share my pain!
