It's complicated

I have been self-employed since I left college - I have paid my taxes up to 2007. I earned money in 2008 & 2009 but did not pay my taxes, I had troubles going in my life and was not in a very good place at the time. I do not know if I am still registered as self-employed with the revenue - can I check this relatively easily?

What previous problems I had pailed in comparison to the traumatic life event which hit me next and left me with a severe social anxiety, I never left the house or earned any money in 2010 & 2011. I lived off fairly substantial savings that I had and was living with my parents who also provided me with food, heat & emotional support. I spent very little while I was house bound, I did however complete online education and won't be finished until June of next year.

I now want to go to an accountant to pay my taxes for 2008 & 2009. I still have substantial savings in which to pay my back taxes. I have seen a psychologist and resolved my severe social anxiety and can now walk happily through crowded streets again. But I am looking to sign on the dole and look for a job in July of next year after I have completed my course, I am hoping to get Jobseekers Allowance which will probably be means tested as I have not earned any income in 2010 & 2011. I was a PAYE employee almost 10 years ago but do not have a P45 which I think I may need in order to sign on.

What can I do in order to tidy up my tax situation and enable me to sign on the dole next year? I am highly educated and do not expect to be on the dole for too long, there are many available jobs in my field that I am more than qualified for - what happens if I get a job? Will I be on emergency taxes as I don't have a P45? I would rather not explain my traumatic past to a new employer - i want a fresh start.

I would be hugely greatful for any guidance you can provide me.

    I am me again.

1.a quick phonecall to revenue will confirm if you are self employed and have outstanding returns due
    2. either do the returns your self or get an accountant to bring you up to date
    3. then deregister for self employed assessment if you dont think this is where your future income will come from
    4. you will not need a p45 startiing a new job - if it is in the new year just ask revenue to provide you with a statement of tax credits and standard cut off point.
    5. sorry can not advise you on the SW aspect , but you do not need your old p45 ---they will have your contributions on file..
