Is there a rating agency for solicitors or how is one to know the good ones from the average ones.?

No , no impartial ' ratings agency ' exists . Best thing is to ask for recommendations from family / friends who have used Solicitors for issues similar to yours - be that conveyancing , family law , etc.

There is a site called Ratemysolicitor.com - be very wary of acting on any opinions it contains , there is no way of verifying any of the comments it contains. It would be most unwise to decide to hire / not hire a Solicitor based on anything you read there.

A good inclination at this time of year is whether there are still lights on in the office

Nice one dazza. Sadly to try to cope I find the unsocial hours have to be worked by the principal

Lest we forget that Mussolini used to leave his office light on late into the night but rather than working at his desk he was usually with his mistress !

Not suggesting that nuac is doing that mind :D

Can a signature be checked for originality? and who is qualified to do this?

Nuac at his age would be happy to spread the rumour that he has a mistress. If that young fella Berlusconi could entertain 'em there's hope for Nuac yet.

That attitude is what has got a lot of people in trouble. Being involved in litigation for years because of some incompetent solicitor not doing their job properly is often worse than a too high fine for a criminal offence. As a matter of fact criminal law practitioners have to do most of their work in public and have to rely on repeat business from their clients and clients friends. It becomes pretty clear whether they are up to the job or not very quickly.
There are people who can't sell their house for years because their solicitor has messed up. There are people who are sued by their bank because their solicitor hasn't complied with an undertaking. All of that just because they tried to save a few hundred quid!

i couldnt agree more , i employed a cheap small town two bit solicitor to represent me in a criminal case some years ago and it ended up costing me much more than money , any legal professional worth his salt would have made mince meat of the case yet i ended up loosing what was a stonewall clear cut case in which i was the injured party , was young and naieve at the time and took this idiots advice not to appeal and its a descision i regret ever since

i recently paid big money to a well respected solicitor in the capital and they were worth every penny due to thier expert advice

ratemysolicitor.com is down, it just goes to a blank page with a banner for the site and it says the domain may be for sale.
