    Cheers,

I know you are joking but there actually are several charity groups that do work in this area.

I watched a pretty good doc on Nat Geo recently called 'The Secret World of Hasidism' (I've been waiting for it to pop up on youtube or somewhere so I could post it) and there are several groups in the US (and presumably elsewhere) that offer support to Hasidic Jews that leave their religion. Often these people find themselves suddenly without a friend or supportive family member in the world and very few of the skills needed to live productive adult lives in mainstream society. They help them get into proper education, find apartments and basically become self sufficient. A big challenge for a lot of them seemed to be simply learning how to make their own decisions about things, as previously they had every major decision set out for them.

I know there is also an organisation that supports Mormon apostates in the US.

There are also groups such as Cult Information Centre in the UK that do work in this area.

I wasn't joking. There was one mentioned in a Dawkins documentary just can't remember the name of it.

When I registered to volunteer in Israel, an organisation like this was offered to me called Hillel (http://www.charity-charities.org/Israel-charities/RamatGan-1464750.html)- their basic aim is to offer support to counteract the isolation someone leaving an ultra-orthodox community might face, and often the abuse they would have suffered while part of it, and to help reconstruct their lives without the influences of extreme religion. People really underestimate the extent to which religion interferes with basic aspects of human life- Judaism even has a prayer that you need to say when you use the toilet... it takes a lot of adjustment to lead an 'ordinary' life after you've been praying every time you take a dump

I've had good results with a combination of fine alcohol, good books and general apathy about other peoples' beliefs.

    Fellow Heathens,

the Heathens do believe in gods and so tend to post in the paganism forum.

Was curious so I looked this up. Three of the four definitions could apply to atheists.
    noun /ˈhēT͟Hən/
    heathens, plural

derogatory. A person who does not belong to a widely held religion (esp. one who is not a Christian, Jew, or Muslim) as regarded by those who do

A follower of a polytheistic religion; a pagan

Heathen people collectively, esp. (in biblical use) those who did not worship the God of Israel

derogatory. An unenlightened person; a person regarded as lacking culture or moral principles

"Heathen" and "pagan" are ancient words for "culchie", because country people are backward no matter where you go. ;)
what happens when a hasidic jew meets a basic jew?

That would be an ecumenical matter.

I told that hasidic/basic Jew joke to an Israeli friend and he just got angry and demanded to know what I thought a 'basic' Jew was :(

    Can't please 'em all!

As a person of Jewish descent, I don't take kindly to jokes about us Jews.
I think they often cement prejudices and misinterpretations of the Jewish people and culture.
But, every now and then, even I enjoy a good laugh and feel that I shouldn't be so serious about everything.

So I have a very good joke about the holocaust here, if anyone wants to buy it.

    XD

Just reminded me of an interesting moment on the bus in Israel when my boyfriend was telling me that I needed to be careful with what I said or it might get me in trouble cos people tend to be a little more... highly strung there. 10 minutes later the bus was bouncing around like crazy and I said to him; "whoah, it's like a roller coaster!"
Dude in front of us whips around-- "did you say it's like the Holocaust??"
Sweet Jesus, what have I gotten myself in for...

In ancient times, everyone was a culchie and anyway there were no jackeens because there were no union jacks to wave. ;)
