    I was just thinking.
Assume there's a person resident outside Ireland in the EU who comes here to Ireland every year for a 2 months holidays.

Would it be legal, if such person brought a car registered in his/her home country and keep it in Ireland permanently? Only use it for 2 months every year when he/she is here, and keep it parked/garaged for the remaining 10 months.

Would this be against any law?

I assume - yes - it is illegal.

I understand it would be perfectly legal if such person drove into Ireland every year with such car for 2 months, but it's illegal just because car is going to be stored here.

The question is - how would anyone know if it was stored here?
Or actually if it can't be stored here, I understand it can be brought to NI for those 10 months to be stored there.
Would then the whole thing be legal?

maybe rent car or 2 months.. if want fancy , new car, or cheaper option, buy car... as there is plenty cars for cheap price. Get Audi A4 or vw pasat 00 ish plates, around grad or two, and no hassle. not sure about insurance, probably may set up somehow for only two months. maybe named driver on friends car would sort everything, and just borrow friends car for 2 months.

    Too expensive option.

    Insurance is the problem here.
No Irish insurance company will insure someone who is not resident in Ireland.
And even if they would, price for whole year would be too much.

yes because its been permanently imported rather than just visiting. VRT due.

But paying VRT means registering it in Ireland.
If car is registered in Ireland it needs Irish insurance.
And this is impossible to obtain by someone who is not resident here.

Overall the whole thing is just impossible to be done.

But if the car was stored in NI for remaining 10 months every year, I assume all would be legal. Wouldn't it?

Are you sure the owners insurance covers the car abroad for more than 2 months?

    Yes.
Every third party car insurance in EU is valid in every EU country for the whole period of the policy.

Yes indeed, I was just wondering about fully comp, if that doesn't matter then that should be fine.
