Just looking for some advice on what 1.4 diesel car would be good. I was looking at peugeot 206s and 307s but heard they are not supposed to be great. Currently I have a 1.8 diesel and the tax and insurance are costing too much. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

1.4 corolla diesel came out in summer 04

Difference in tax between 1.4 and 1.8 is insignificant

    551 vs 333

Over the year, yes. The extra cost of maintenance, tyres, diesel, insurance add up to a not insignificant cost.

I need to sell my current car and buy something cheaper as well so just thought I might as well get a smaller car since I don't need a big car anymore. I was just looking for advice on which smaller cars are reliable. I would like a Corolla but unfortunately they are a bit out of my price range.

How much more maintenance does a 1.8 have over a 1.4?

Probably not much in fairness but tyres, diesel and insurance are going to cost more. More torque/power, more weight, more insurance.

I have a 04 focus (sounds like a transit). I think I'm going to take your advice and stick with it. Although I am quite bored with it so if I do change it I might get something with a similar size engine.

I'm currently "test Driving" a 2010 peugeot 308 for about a week until some time next week

its a 1.6 Diesel (and dont know if its a turbo ?)

Description: Peugeot 308 1.6hdi S 90BHP 05DR Body Type: Hatchback Colour: Black Fuel Type: Diesel Transmission: Manual

It has a bit of poke but nothing to get excited about at all but will do a decent motorway speed and more but takes a bit longer to get there.

MPG wise its "ok" at the moment on motorway driving since i got it im averaging about 48MPG just going up and down the M50 (i was getting about that and better from the 1.6 ASX)

i dont know what it is either but i dont like the driving position with the seat and steering wheel position. not comfortable but not breaking my back either.

Back seat leg room is complete muck.

    boot space is fairly decent.

doesnt look amazingly great on the inside on dash etc.

looks good on the outside but thats about it.

wouldn't recommend it to be honest.

Replacement - couldnt say too much, i know the 1.6 diesel turbo focus is ok to begin with but lacks at times and you'd get about 50mpg from it.

i reckon for dual carraige ways and the likes 1.4 diesel would struggle unless you did granny driving.

Which car would you be referring to, that has a 1.4 diesel engine?
For what its worth, i find the 1.4 diesel engine great.
Loads (i know i know!) of power, loads of mpg (80), loads of complete reliability. Turbo hasn't "gone boom" yet, like you would be led to believe here sometimes.;)

I have a 1.9 Tdi and I get around 180 miles for 20 euro (although, it's been about a month since I last checked).

A friend of mine at a 1.4 HDI 207, probably the best car I've ever seen on fuel and in no way did it struggle at motorway speeds.

That kind of information is in very short supply here. You'd think bmw's, alfas and octavias were the only cars in the world sometimes!:D

Best mpg I came across was on a lancia Musa (same as fiat idea) 1.3 multijet

To be fair, he had a bit of trouble with it. The electrics were always wrong, and (vague information) some pipe inside the engine that was made of plastic:confused: melted and the engine had to be pretty much rebuilt!

That's a fairly cool looking motor!

It isn't in real life, the only cool thing is the rear door and elements of the interior. On the whole it's a pretty poor car with some nice details.
