is your classic on the road? My Mk4 Cortina has been out the last couple of days on test runs, done about 350 miles I should say :-) and the Sierra was out today ,did about 80 miles. Are you out there at all?

Took it out for a spin Tuesday...& ended up going through Jack Lynch tunnel, think that took care of any cobwebs, seeing as I live in Clare :):)

Very little these days TBH sadly. A few of them need taxing too...:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 448 ✭✭alpina

Ya, taxing the very reason so many old cars are sat up in garages or worse scrapped, all as a result of a farce of a system (ok no rant) just a shame you end up paying more than the car cost over a few years..:(

I was about to take my 101 off the road for a load of work but there's a charity road run this Sunday in the village so I'll put it off for a while.

I've found that if I don't use it in the winter, first trip out in the spring will show up a seal gone somewhere so I try and use it all year round. It likes to be used!

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Off the road. Can't afford the €1,566 motor tax for driving a few thousand miles each year. It's been like that for quite some time and it will be like that for quite some time more until either an enthusiast will buy my car or it will be 30 years old and qualify for the €48 motor tax

Unless of course the country's economy will strive again. Yeah right. Not going to happen when we pay all of our public servants more salary and pension than any other public servants in the world...

Unfortunately mine is off the road since June. Under cover at the parents as can't afford to tax it at the moment (plus I need to sort out a leak) so it will probably be next summer before its on the road when I'll transfer the insurance form my laguna and tax it instead.

The tax system is seriously stupid and crazy expensive here alright.

On the road! Have two kids so as a second car it gets called into action a few times a week.

Drove it to football last night and home in torrential rain.
(At least the water drains are clear now).

Got to use my newly-working rear defroster which was exciting. :p

Always out on the road 24/7/365 as GS is my main car. Taxed, insured & ready to go. No2 car awaiting parts back from the powder coaters, but like no1, T&I'd. Same with no 3, T&I'd, but awaiting some front suspension work. No4 over the water is T&T&I'd, but needs a rear silencer. Otherwise good to go. ;)

I'v pressed my Carlton back into action since last week as I had a prang in the R 75, not the best in this sh1tty weather, still it's warm and comfy.

But it's amazing how big a difference the visibility is between small patches and no patches!

Though the voltage drop when you switch it on is alarming.

I love it...;) see this is what classic car ownership turns us into, who in their right mind gets excited over a working rear defroster Ya I'll admit it, I do! I must have spent nearly two months of evenings tracing wires/cables/fuses in order to get everything working inside, worth it though!! right down to the light bulb in the ashtray:o:o

Mr2 is off the road for the winter. Just tax it for 6 months in April. Only 4 years to go to the cheap tax buut by then those sods in government will probably have got rid of the vintage tax - hopefully not.

Mines only out on dry days I'm afraid.

But given the weather we're having, getting a dry weekend is a tough one...

Since mine missed all of the summer, I've been making the best of dry days, and it's doing a run to Belfast next weekend - regardless of weather.

Definitely haven't been out as much this year compared to previous years but I still try to get even a short spin in once every couple of weeks. Gave her a wash this morning but was too lazy to dry the car after washing. I find a steady 80mph on the M50 is a good speed to blow the water off!

You forget the heartache when stuff works! It's overwhelmed by the feeling of satisfaction of having achieved.

I still roll my windows up and down a bit at traffic lights just because I (finally) can. :D

Was out of work for the first few months of this year, So couldent insure the Zodiac. The M.G T&I ran out about June- so not on the road since then. My motorbike got nicked last May, I replaced this and was glad I did as we got a few nice days. I am moving the Landrover to a mates place, who has a barn, and hope to do some work on her over the coming months - and avail of the 3 car for 300 yo yos deal via the Irish vintage society gig. I have started all periodically, and moved them about a bit, but My God... how quickly they sieze up and deteriorate, is amazing. The SUs on the M.G were p1ssing the last time, and I cant start the Landrover at all (fuel pump ???).. The old dependable Ford (Zoe) is the only one who gives no Jip, though her bodywork is tireing... The Joys:)

Went out a very short charity road run today, it got curtailed as Lucas, the Prince of Darkness, struck with a vengeance on all the ex BL cars that see little regular use. First it was a 65 Triumph Herald, then a Riley RMA and an Austin Princess (1100), all of them with dodgy points. My brother in laws Princess Wedge had a dodgy battery so he left it running while he fixed everyone elses but that stopped and couldn't be started, it went home on a trailer!

I'm going to see if I can get a good deal on electronic dizzys and hawk them round the village

Hi beemerfan, did your father get to look at those heater valves yet? probably stuck/seized. Anyway, the paintwork is coming along by degrees and dont forget the offer of workspace is always open. Got to stick together. And as for the tax, dont start me! A years tax on my yoke is more than I paid for the car!!

Well my sierra is too "new" for the snobs and it's certainly not eligible for vintage tax, but currently is NCT'd and taxed and is on the road every day, and in fairness to it, being a 1990 car it IS old in terms of the average age of cars on the road, and most average people would be scared to drive it thinking it couldn't possibly work, at nearly 22 years old. Goin great though. I'm not really calling it a classic though just an old car in nice condition that i enjoy driving far more than most new cars

Ahh - on that basis my 'daily driver', which was built in 1989 qualifies. NCT coming up before christmas - need to sort blowing exhaust and overheating problem, but it runs all winter - it's got the rust spots to prove it!

Bringing my 86 LeBaron convertible to Charleville for an NCT tomorrow. Only took the car out once during the summer due to the poor weather and then we ended up driving into thick fog on the south coast.

    I'm seriously considering selling.

Indeed, we already have a combination of specs in just the two cars, petrol and diesel, hatchback and saloon.
