Can Deep Pockets be 'fixed'?

    I suffer from pocketing around most of my teeth, molars being the worst offenders with pockets as deep as 8mm on some.

    I recently had a non-impacted semi-erupted wisdom tooth extracted after days of exquisite pain. It had seriously deep pockets that were trapping food below the gum line. I'm no expert, but when I examined the extracted tooth I could see a serious patch of decay going on just above the root where the nerve was.

    Anyway, can pocketing be 'fixed'? I'm worried that I'm going to have similar problems in the not too distant future with more essential teeth.

    Pocketing= gum(periodontal)disease= risk future tooth mobility&/tooth loss.
    Pockets can be treated& reduced in depth; however, your response to treatment is highly dependant on your own day-to-day plaque control....ie: excellent oral hygiene.
    If you are prone to gum disease, treat it in the same way you would Type2 Diabetes....in that it's something you keep at bay as opposed to "cure", per se.
    If your management of the disease is good, things will stabilise/improve. If your management is poor, the disease will return/worsen.
    General advice:
    --Attend your dental surgery regularly to both measure pocket depths& clean deep pockets.
    --Use floss&/TePe interdental brushes daily
    --Attend a gum specialist(periodontist) for assessment&/treatment.
    --Quit smoking
    PS: I would consider the molars with 8mm pockets as being "essential teeth", but then I like my food! ;)
