Nexus One - No network / Cell

I've got a Nexus One that's unable to get signal from O2. It's been going on for about a week or so now and it's giving me an awful headache. Wifi works though - 3G etc obviously doesn't.

    I've two questions:

    1) Is there a way to kill the process that's attempting to connect to the O2 Operator Network on android? Because the phone is constantly attempting to connect and it's eating away at the battery life enormously (the phone currently lasts about 3 hours after fully charged on a new, working battery)

    2) Has anyone else had this problem? :pac:

I'd probably root the phone and take a look to see if I could ensure the process is killed on boot, but I cba.

It's really just a niggling problem that I'd like to be able to solve.

TL;DR - Can't get network, battery dying a death, how do I kill the process that's attempting to connect to O2?

Put the phone in airplane mode, then re-enable just Wi-Fi. This will leave the phone portion disabled with only WiFi enabled.
