If you have a phone that supports tethering its handy. Basicly use your phone as a wifi card.

I don't think tethering is a workable solution in the medium term. It absolutely eats your phone battery. I used it for a week while we were on holidays over the summer and have had noticeably worse battery life since.

Is using wifi an option OP?

I dont know about that, it gets a charge from the usb cable. I dont know how long the op wants to use it i just went with the info i was provided :-)

Look up your phone specs and see if it supports tethering for a start.
You then turn on your wifi and enable tethering through the phone settings.

I've got a tv box that I want to put in my bedroom that needs to be connected to the router but the router is out in the kitchen and my room is in the room next to the kitchen.

Whats the cheapest i'd pay for ethernet plugs?

Ah i see, easiest way is ebay id say. Bearing in mind cheap ones might not do the job for streaming as noise from the electricity travelling trough the wiring can interfere. The pricier they are te better the filtration. So iv ben told.

These were posted in bargain alerts a few weeks ago http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004INVKP4/.
Just had a look at some in Maplin & PC World recently & they were easily twice that price....

i had a pair of them that I was using to connect a satellite box but suffered constant dropouts in the signal...but i think it was to do with the box being quite a distance from the router.

However, I have had much better success using one of these:

    http://www.ebay.ie/itm/Vonets-Vap11G-Wifi-Bridge-Dreambox-Xbox-360-/270846610050?pt=UK_Computing_Networking_SM&hash=item3f0fb74a82#ht_1128wt_1185

And it was actually cheaper to buy then the ethernet plugs in the first place.

Oh it's a good idea. I just think tethering's grand for a bit of light use here and there but I found that heavy use (like I did while on holidays, sharing it as an AP among 3 of us) it murdered the battery to the point of it lasting less after the holiday than it did before.

I bought these and they have added over 9Mb/s to my download speed in my bedroom since I moved from wireless! Well worth the money

they *can* be great, but if you don't have great house wiring, if you are crossing to a different fuse/circuit in your fuse box (i.e. upstairs to downstairs)) or if you use a lot of CFL light bulbs, you most likely won't have a huge amount of luck with them.

i have very similar 200mbps ones and they are slower than wireless for me (for all of the reasons above) although it was handy being able to buy 2 packs and use them all at once to connect 3 devices to my network without running cable.

ultimately though, you can't beat a run of cat5e cable for speed and reliability and it's usually not as hard as you'd think (for someone who knows what they're doing) to run a cable out of sight behind a wall, or up into an attic and back down again.

i was using my Desire HD as a wireless access point for 3 people at a client site for several weeks and didn't have any issues at all. I did keep it connected to my laptop via USB to avoid draining the battery too much, but other than that it was grand.

The fact you had it connected constantly could that have taken the strain off the batt? I know if i used my android for long periods the battery gets pretty warm. Aswell as Khannie being on hols ,id imagine they were in a hot country adding to the strain on they're battery.

Apparently Li-ion batterys dont handle heat to well, and once they've been cooked they degrade pretty quick

i haven't noticed any problems since using it, although it was pretty warm at the time.

having said that, the DHD isn't exactly famous for it's stunning battery life. :D
