    Hi just contacted the owner about this car and he informed me that there is a chain in this car hasn't had anything done in that department in 8 years. Can you tell me if he's right?

    Thats what i was thinking but said mechanic told him it was a chain, he said it was serviced 5000-6000 miles ago, hasn't been used much in the last year as they have a second car not insured at the moment. What you think?
    It looks like an ok car.

    Said mechanic is mistaken. The older 1.3 corolla engine has a timing belt. I wouldn't touch the car till the belt has been replaced.

    Just look elsewhere, there are plenty of cars out there for that money.

    Get it checked out, just for your own piece of mind. if that belt goes, kiss the engine goodbye.

    Ye will do that, just a final question how much to replace belt in these cars + i would imagine the water pump would need done?

    I'd say around 300 euro. The fact that the belt has never been changed would have me suspecting there was a bit of owner neglect. could be wrong but it would put me off.

    other cars of this age i would recommend;

    mazda 323 1.3
    honda civic 1.4
