Cancelling SKY sub...moving house

    Hi,

I am with SKY for just over a year now...moved from UPC (they were very unhelpful in every aspect of customer care over my years with them, overcharged me without asking and without changing my basic subscription...took me months to get my money back, and they were hell on earth to deal with when I wanted to change address).

So I have a basic package with SKY, 27euro per month, they installed it with a SKY + or HD box or something like that even though I dont have a HD TV, it was free to new customers at the time. I also dont have a phone line so I paid around 60euro for it to be installed.
All in all I have never had any problems with them...have had no contact with them since it was installed.

But once bitten (by UPC) twice shy I guess...I am moving next week & am worried I am going to get screwed again, just because I am changing address! I definately cannot afford to pay for installation, new boxes or whatever else...

Just wondering if anyone has had experience changing address & bringing SKY with them?
I was told by a friend to watch out, to say I am cancelling and then reapply in the new address under my husbands name? But if I am having to pay for installation under my name to move address anyway then I'd rather not have to take out a new contract with them in my mans name, just in case anything goes wrong in the next 12 months.

As I said I have no phone line (purely because its an extra bill) and I am totally dunce when it comes to TV stuff...but UPC has me paranoid!

I want to be a bit more empowered with companies like this this time around!

Ring sky and ask them to suspend your account while you are moving, they may actually close the account for you if it is easier. They should also tell you to bring the sky box with you when moving as that is yours! The dish usually gets left at your old address for the next resident. When you move ring them up and ask them to connect you up at your new address, they may try to charge for this installation but argue that you have already paid for the previous installation and say you will consider getting a free to air dish if sky won't install the dish free. You should not have to pay the no-phone fee again either.

The process should be pretty painless and you should be connected to sky again within a week-ten days.

Do you know if there is a satellite dish where you are moving? If there is, it's likely that all you need to do is unplug and replug!

But if needed sky can have an engineer call out and as advised argue over the cost and they may waive the charge for reconnecting you as they will be happy you are staying with sky.

Sky do a Free House Move scheme, just ring them and arrange a date to move your equipment, they reccommend giving 2 weeks notice just in case anything unexpected pops up plus you won't be left in your new house with no Sky.

Just remind them you have already paid for not having phone line connected op or they may try to charge you again.

Thanks everyone for the advice...I took a deep breath and rang SKY and said I was moving address and they were well chilled about it *attention UPC: take note!*
    :)
So they do indeed do a free house move service...I was going to avail of this as I thought there was no dish at the new house and set up an appointment for someone to come out and install...I do not have a phone line so thought there'd be problems with having to pay for installation again, but no 'hidden' fees anywhere...

But when I called out to the new place I saw there actually was a dish around the side of the house so I just plugged my SKY box into the existing cables in the house and no hiccups.

Also I dont start a new contract with them either.

Thanks for all the help everyone...I'm much happier having to pay SKY for tv services and get no hassle than having to pay UPC and have agro all the time!
