    Hey guys,
quick question, my learner permit has been out of date for well over a year as I have not been driving I never renewed it!

will I have to re-sit my theory test?

if not as I would be going to a second permit would I still be caught by the 12 lessons rule?

    any help much appreciated!

No, you won't have to resit your theory test - you only need to do this if it's been 5 or more years since your permit expired.

As for the 12 lessons rule, it goes by the date you got your first Learner Permit, so you'll be fine in that regard as you got had your first Learner Permit issued before 4th April 2011 (when the changes came into effect).

All you need to do is reapply for your second learner permit, so as usual, you'll need to complete the form in the motor tax office (including PPS number), 2 passport photographs signed at the back, the €15 fee and your previous (expired) learner permit!

Whatabout when you're provisional license IS out of date more than 5 years?

Re-take the theory test and then am I onto my 2nd provisional, or does the fact that i've retaken the test means it's a fresh reboot and i'm back to my 1st one?

Do you need a recent eye sight report too?

I'm 99% sure that as you are applying for a second learner permit, you do not need an eyetest, as you will have gotten an eyetest to apply for your first learner permit.

Of course, if it's the first learner permit you are applying for, then you need all of the above (except the previous expired learner permit) and you need an eyesight report (which is valid for only one month!) and your certificate of passing the theory test.

But in the case of applying for a second learner permit, your old learner permit serves as proof of having passed the theory test and the eyesight test.
