CPC CARD

I passed my "D" licence test early this month and got my new licence.

What is the story with getting a "CPC Card" ?
I note it mentions on the back page of my "CPC Practical Test Cert" that the RSA will be in touch with me regarding my CPC card.

Now, the RSA havent been in touch with me about this yet. Should I contact them about getting the CPC Card? Does anyone know how you get your CPC card and is the CPC Card just another name for the Drivers Card?

    Cheers in advance.

    The Jesus Nut.

The RSA will post you out a form to complete and send back to them, with 2 signed pictures. I did mine nearly 2 years ago so I'm a bit rusty with regards to everything you need to send them.

My advice is if you haven't recieved the form in 2 weeks I'd ring them and find out what the story is. And well done on passing.

I got the CPC card for the C/EC by grandfather rights.

When I queried why D/ED wasn't on it I was told by the RSA that they'd add D/ED to the card when I'd completed the 5 years of classes.

Did you pass your CPC D class recently? If so they should have them on your CPC card. I never drove a truck in my life before this CPC thing came in. I passed the Truck test and all the CPC modules and got my CPC card with the C category on it.

I not 100% confident that the RSA know exactly what this CPC thing is in the first place. I'm sure if you speak to another member of staff they'll give you a different answer.

Yeah I've got it the wrong way round. I've got the CPC card for D, for which I passed the tests, and will have C added to it when I do the classes, as I have it through Grandfather rights.

I find it's the same in most large organisations. But I know what I have and that's what matters.

Yeah that's about right. Once you complete the 5 CPC modules for the truck you'll get it added on to your card.

Yes unfortunately. You have to do 1 of 5 modules before you reach the date you first passed your Cpc test. For instance I passed my Cpc on the 7th of April so I normally do a Module every March.

But always make sure you do a different module each year and keep copies of the certs you're given for reference. But if you're unsure where you stand, a simple call th the RSA can ease your worries!

oh ok,so I got issued my cpc card on 16-11-2010 and havent done any modules yet,so do I have to do the whole cpc over as in hire a lorry and do the "show and tell" and book in to do the theory test and case studies again?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,155 ✭✭✭✭Del2005

It's a bit vague as you only need the CPC as a professional driver. Since you're not a professional driver you don't need to have a CPC.

The problem comes when you want to go professional, in a few years, but haven't done your classes. Do you need to resit the tests or just start doing modules again.

The only real way to know is call the RSA. Hopefully their knowledge of the CPC process is improving.

Hmmm that's a tricky one alright Triple. Because this thing is so new even the RSA are still ironing out problems. I'd personally ring the RSA, explain that you "Forgot" to do your first module before 16/11/10 and can you do two before 16/11/12 to bring you back up to date.

I'd assume they'd allow you if you're nice enough to them (:)) Even at the worst you won't have to repeat the Theory Test(Not applicable to CPC) or Case Studies(Already completed). Not sure if you'd have to repeat the Show and Tell (CPC) which would require the rental of a truck.
    Hope this helps buddy.

I rang up the rsa and told them I missed the deadline for completing one module of periodic training, they said as the whole cpc is in its early days they will allow people who miss deadlines to complete modules at a later date(within reason)but that in future deadlines would be more strictly enforced. She said if anyone misses a deadline for a module and completes it at a later date. They need to send the rsa a brief letter explaining why they missed it and a copy of their cpc card.

I'm still waiting on the RSA to contact me about getting a CPC card!
I passed the test nearly 2 months ago now and nothing from them and it clearly states on my test report thing on the back that they will be in touch with me regarding the issue of my CPC card!

I tell ya one thing, you wouldnt want to have a job lined up after passing your test the speed of the RSA these days.....

Also, how does one find a bus driving job?
All companies only seem to recruit drivers with 2-3 years experience!

Im 24 and have 2 years car and van driving experience..

any jobs going lads or any advice for a Bus wannabe? cheers

To be honest Jesus the RSA aren't known for their efficiency! All you can do is keep ringing them until they send you out the card. If they see you as a nuisance they'll do anything to be rid of you. Ring them everyday and explain you need the card for a Job offer.

As for getting work as a Bus Driver I understand your frustration. How can you get the Job without the experience but how can you get the experience without the job!?

It really is an employers market as you know and there's an abundance of experienced unemployed Bus Drivers out there. My only recommendation is maybe volunteer as a Bus driver and maybe in time you could be offered a paid position?

At present the RSA do permit drivers who have fallen behind to "play catch up" provided they explain in writing (old fashioned letter) why they fell behind with thier training. Some training providers provide template letters to clients on request.

In the event a driver undertakes a journey which is considered as professional without being update they are liable to prosecution (legislation in place but no cases taken as yet). More worringly the Irish Insurance Federation & RSA issued statements last year to say that in the event of a serious accident a driver not up to date is "unlikely" to be insured. In the small print on most policies it states the driver must hold all licence(s) and qualifications legally required for the class of vehicle and the Driver CPC is one of these. I know of one such case where an owner driver was left without cover for being behind on his CPC commitments.

In relation to falling behind in your CPC modules...

the modules are done over a five year cycle, if in year five you have not done any of the modules (could be out of work, sick, living abroad) but take a job offer in year five you will need to catch up on all the modules you missed.....

if you go into the second cycle, year six if you will, then you only need to do one module, because you are at the beginning of the next cycle of five modules...

the letter to the RSA is simply to say why you have not done any of the modules... I blah blah, have not done any modules to date because I have been blah blah.

I hope this does not add to the confusion.

hi faith, what is" DELIVERY WINDOW" and what is the industry standard on it.

hi faith, what is" DELIVERY WINDOW" and what is the industry standard on it.

I think that refers to the anticipated time a Logistics company would give the driver to deliver the goods. They would take into account the load carried, distance, traffic etc... and would come up with a rough time allocation. For instance it wouldn't talke a driver 2 hours to deliver goods from Blanchardstown to the City Centre if you get my meaning!

As for Industry Standard I honestly couldn't tell you as I have the licence but don't currently work in the industry. There's two posters I'd recommend you ask who know their stuff and thats "DonkeyBalls and The Little Trucker"

hi faith, what is" DELIVERY WINDOW" and what is the industry standard on it.

The delivery window/time is when a customer p*sses you off and you fcuk their goods through their shop window:pNah only messing what it means is a route planned with just say two/three shops to deliver to.
1st just say gets the delivery at 0600(normally depending on the contract there could be a 30 min window) which means between 0600/0630 the delivery can be made without been late.
As for industry standard I never heard of a definate time and I have been around a good while working in the industry what you will find is that the questions have been made up by someone who propely never drove a truck or worse never worked in the industry.

No and to be honest donkey I never really looked. I did my Rigid test just to have a back-up if my job went t*ts up. But from what you said previously regarding the pay on offer €9 hr, I'd much rather flip burgers than have that responsibility.

But I don't regret doing it, I have it on my licence and it's only going to get more difficult and more exensive in the future for new lads/Girls trying to enter the logistics game. All in all it cost me roughly €1200.

If the economy ever picks up the pay and conditions for people working in the transport industry will pick up again sometime ago I was talking to a person with about 20 years plus experience more than my self.
And they reckon it was like this years ago and that it will pick up but god knows when that will happen all you can do is plug away and keep the head down, also your more employable as an artic driver than a ridgid driver although trying to get work with no expereince is another thing.

Completely agree. I'm fortunate enough to be happy working away with what I have but I'll stick with the Rigid, I really wouldn't have the interest in Artic Driving. But who knows what the future holds? I could wake up dead tomorrow!
