    Hello,
I need to get a serum blood sample taken to send off to the states for some private testing. My GP can only take a whole blood sample - does anyone know how/where I can arrange to get a serum sample?

Any GP will be able to take a serum blood sample. It just depends on the tube the blood goes in. In my experience, serum samples are drawn in brown-capped tubes (if it's the Monovette system) or orange capped (if your GP uses the Vacuette system).

Thanks for the response Sweetface - with a serum blood sample does the blood not have to be spun to seperate the components required from what's not?

I see what you mean. Yes it has to be spun before getting tested. It's put in a centrifuge and the gel seperates the cells from the serum. Some (very few) GP surgerys have a cenrtifuge. You would need the services of a lab to do that. It depends on the test in question, I'm not sure if it will matter that it's not spun before being sent to The States.

Suppose I can contact the lab in the States to see if I can send the blood sample unspun and get them to do it - they speciifically ask for a serum sample though so unsure if this will be acceptable.

If I do need the services of a lab here, I assume this would have to be one of the hospitals? I'm based in Cork.

Yes any of the hospitals can do it - Mercy, CUH, St. Finbarrs all have labs. You can get your GP to send the sample to the lab, they will spin it and then you'll have to find a way of getting it back to you for sending it on to the States I guess.
