Perhaps I was a bit harsh in my original post.

That society is crap. They organise the odd day out to poor midweek racing but it's just to get people drinking. No one in it knows the foggiest about racing from what I can gather

You should get to know a few more members in the soc Urban before going on a rant. The society has the most potential of any soc in TCD and can only do good for Horse racing in Ireland.

It has gotten a lot of members but they were enticed by free entry to clubs and things when they joined,I asked around plenty of people who I knew that signed up.

That said I hope it will take off. Buying the horse will hopefully get a lot of people involved.

Good to hear it's expanding. I was a member back in my time in TCD & some of the meetings could have been held in a phone booth!

    What were the meetings colonel?

There are none at the minute. Just every few weeks a day at the races

The majority of societies entice members by free entry to clubs etc, I joined and there's plenty of lads in the society that know their racing inside out. Onwards and upwards...ps-Local Celebrity next time out..:D

If I'm not mistaken a few of these lads involved are fairly well connected in the Horse Racing industry?
Pretty nice horse to have for any syndicate, let alone a college society!
Hope it works out well for all involved.

To me it just looks like another tentacle of the tcd law soc. Would have been interested in getting involved but looks like a closed shop, no meetings about the running of the society or is there encouragement to get actively involved just an email as to when the next raceday is planned. Would be a great society if more inclusive.

    That's what I got too.

Would be great to have more activities and engagement now that there is a horse

We used to meet up every Thursday & sit around drinking tea, eating biscuits & talking ****e!

It'd often end with us heading to the powers on Lemon Street to punt a horse & then head on an almighty drinking session.

I graduated in 03 so that's a while ago. Good times!!!

As far as I can remember we shared a room with the law soc but there was no affiliation back then.

Please tell me the "Grand National" still goes ahead after the AGM with everyone blind drunk.....

Whats rubbish? How much do you reckon it costs/month to have a horse in training?

Why oh why would you expect word for a horse you have zero affiliation with? Don't cry man.

    Congrats to the society.

I hope he is sh!t. The guys involved could have signed up to De Bromheads scheme but would rather a closed shop!

Lads just to clarify things. The horse runs under the Trinity Horse Racing Club, but all prize money is still kept by Mullins or his wife who was the owner. The horse was given to the society, but it's just in name that it's owned really.

I didn't realise what you meant the first time-Why would you assume there'd be word for it here when there is no one on the forum involved with the horse?

    That's a bit ridiculous innit?

It's a good incentive to get the members interested I thought. No bills but publicity

If that's the case why would they get information.

I still think they do hucklebuck

So essentially it would be the same as me putting your name down as owner of my horse, but you have absolutely nothing to do with it. I pay training/vet/entry fees and I keep the prize money?
Does this not make you the legal owner if he's in your name?

I can't understand the logic behind this.

If you compare to another sport eg football, its like setting up a supporters club for a particular team?

    Taken from link in OP;
This purchase marks another achievement for the Horse Racing Society

Are they 'renting' the horse I wonder?

FT9 it's a partnership between TCD Soc and Mullins (split 1% and 99% respectively). Mullins often does this with the horses they own themselves. Gives them a bit of exposure and gets in potential customers down the line. It's a win:win for all concerned. Not that difficult to grasp.

It's all just a bit of fun really. The YITBA do something similar and their horse won the sales race at Fairyhouse last year. You hardly expect they got the money?? HRI is all for this sort of stuff, as am I, as it gives young fans an interest in something. But there is no money changing hands here. 1% of €10k first pot wouldn't even give the club a good night out. But its still a good idea. When I was in UCD, we won the Intervarsity Cup in Leopardstown. We all backed him as he was fancied but we got no prizemoney, but it was good fun.
