    So, definition-wise, does it mean that different waves at any particular point in the medium can be superposed?

    One where the polarization is linear (i.e. proportional and parallel) with the electric field.

    i.e.

    P = k.e.E

    where P is the polarization, E is the electric field, e is the permittivity of free space and k is the electric susceptibility of the medium.

    I think.

    Bit technical, so non linear is like the frequency doublers they use to get from IR to visible ? Not graded index?
