    hi there.

I'm currently driving a 02 bmw 320d and am looking at getting a commercial vehicle for work.

Currently looking at X5s and Merc ml270. Can you suggest anything else I should consider.

whilst the vehicle needs to be commercial it need not be a jeep per se as it won't be carrying much stock. I'm looking for something nice with a bit of pep.

Can you run those as commercial (Merc, BMW) without removing seats etc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Yeah I saw one with folding rear seats... but I was under the impression they needed 0 rear seats, and the seat belts has to be removed and welded over in order to be a commercial vehicle in this country (and taxable as such).

That's what the commercial version is, 2 seats up front, none in the back, blanked out windows, flat floor etc.

    ahh..

My confusion was from looking at the X5 billed as commerical here.. which says it has folding seats..

That car is taxed and registered as commercial, which is highly dodgy, anyone who doe'd that car in the past is equally dodgy.

Yes. Anything else. Literally, anything else. Two worst wheeled abortions ever to dribble down their designers legs. An L200 is better, and thats saying somthing. Avoid Pajeros-crap, anything made in England, anything made in Germany, anything made in France and anything made in Italy. This narrows the field somwhat and will annoy a lot of people, but is ultimatly true. Buy a Toyota, or a toyota, or a Hyundai of some flavour. Or even a Daewoo. Ultimatey, you will ignore this and buy an X5 because of the image. And you will be sorry, like all other X5 owners and sell it on, to someone else who likes the looks.:)

I quite like the new ml, but the old one is best avoided.

Thank you for your advice - but what a sweeping statement. What makes you think that you know exactly what i'll do and that I'll ignore your advice and just stick to bmers? I've had other makes of cars before.

I came here looking for advice and alternatives to what I am looking at .....

Whilst I'd have great fun with the L200 its more of a workhorse of a vehicle than I need. How many IT contractors drive around in L200's!

I've driven new and old model x5s and was always impressed by how car like they were.

I Don't get the hate for them.

I agree. I drove an 03 x5 a few years ago and you have pretty much summed it up. Really nice.

However I'm open to other suggestions.

HI Colm! I did say the L200 was better, but only better than the X5 or the Ml! And I was having a giraffe! I had to jump start one for one of the lads last saturday and all I had to say on it was, jasus, mitsubishi, do bleedin better, will ye. On the X5, I know 4 friends who bought, ranging from 04 onwards and every one of them loved the looks and hated the jeep. All sold/want to sell. They are like a broken pump, they need a sucker to work and need a sucker to buy em.:) The Ml's are like the Vito, made in spain to give you pain.

I was sort of messing, generalising, stating what an awful lot of people do.... not being hugely serious.... I'll get my coat...

It's hard to pick up on the tone of a slag on line I suppose - not to worry.

I'll be doing lots of research. Won't be rushing out to change.

Shouldnt have to go too old either for your budget

I'm in the same boat looking for nice commercial jeep. While ideally i'd love an X5 or a Disco, there seems to be a fairly good chance that something will go wrong. I'll probably go for a Landcruiser, although i'm not a fan of the interior.

An L200 may be better from a reliability aspect but if using a commercial or work purposes that don't require a load bed and X5 or Touareg has it licked. Why?
Because they've a good bit of poke and are quite comfortable and don't handle like an off road vehicle (because in many ways they aren't) Road manners are important to most people.
A touareg might be a good bet there are many online 60k ish miles for around €10k

    Me :)

But I'm not sure I'd recommend it.. I don't need to carry equipment in the back, which is good because it leaks and you will get a large puddle in there during rain (05 Old Shape with a Mountain Top cover). The dealer did mention this when I bought it, but thats fine for me, it was just to carry motocross bikes.

The plus side of having it is.. the crew cab, so you get the extra seats in the back, and if you go for the Trojan version etc. it comes with leather interior etc.
