I think this was their only goal in the tournament and therefore their only actual celebration repeated over and over again on state television.

EDIT actually must have been in qualifying.

So anyway NK won World Cup 2010 in South Africa according to their media. Their participation in the tournament was probably the most bizarre thing at the tournament. I doubt highly any of those fans are genuine. But the team were well drilled in the first game. Brazil only beat them 2 -1 but Portugal took them apart 7 - 0.

But what I am wondering is what happened to the team? Does anyone know? Because I do recall a number of commentators expressing concern about the team.

For WC 2014 it just says "did not qualify" on the wiki page.

those pictures are from the qualifying rounds for WC2014 recently, not the actual finals tournament itself.

most of the team are still playing for North Korea, in fact at least 5 or 6 of them live and play in Japan and are just plastic North Koreans due to the granny rule :P

they are already out of qualifying though after being drawn in a very tough group including Japan and Uzbekistan, two of the better footballing nations in Asia.

I remember stories were going around that the NK manager in South Africa was sent to a forced Labour camp after the team returned. Not true though, as far as I know he is managing one of the leading club sides in North Korea.

They beat Japan about 2 weeks ago in Pyongyang which means more than a World Cup appearance to them I'd say.

That's where the pics of fans celebrating came from.

Actually that defeat over Japan last week means that North Korea are the Unofficial World Champions.
