Cork City bus route numbering being changed for real time info system!

Very odd, just noticed signs on the bus shelters in Patricks St explaining that as of 28 November, Cork City bus routes will be changed to a standardised three digit format to facilitate real time information!

    The 1 becomes 201
    7A, the 207 A
16, the 216 and so on...

    Why is this necessary?
Doesn't this also now mean that Bus Eireann non City routes will clash with Cork City numbering on busses with the same branding???

No - the Cork City routes were always 2xx for internal purposes.

The central bureaucracy needs to be kept busy, I guess!

The Cork (and Limerick) city routes were allocated three digit numbers when BE started publically using route numbers for their non-city services, but they left the old single-digit numbers in use for the public and on the displays.

Limerick City routes are 300 series - i.e. the 8 became the 308 etc.

The rural or commuter routes due not use numbers in the series 200-220, this was done to leave room for the Cork City routes to move to three digits at a later stage.

Well to be fair it does standardise everything.

As it is there are BE routes 1,2,3 etc - they are the expressway services.

There are already two routes 7 and 8 in Cork - the city services and the expressway services. This will eliminate that.

It looks like the Cork City Real Time info is now live on the web :)

    http://www.whensmybus.ie/

For example just select 203 as the route and a stop and it will display the real time arrival info.

Unfortunately the site isn't very well designed, there is no way to bookmark a search and there isn't any text only version for visually impaired people (which I believe is against accessibility laws for semi state companies).

I wonder will Bus Eireann launch an iPhone and Android app for it soon. Or at least create a mobile phone friendly version of whensmybus.ie?

Anybody up for creating their own version?

some interesting numbering of routes (and some imaginary ones) on the RTPI on the whensmybus website...

203B: Carraigaline - Capwell depot - Kent Station - Knocknaheeny - Farranree Church - Parnell Place

    207A - Parnell Place - Merchants Quay - Montenotee

207B - Merchants Quay - Capwell Depot - Patrick St - Well Road (formerly the 7A)

209A - Audley Place - Dillons Cross - Patrick St (wasn't this formerly the 9?)

    212 - Bandon - Parnell Place - Merchants Quay - McCuirtan St - Glenthorn

213 - Park and Ride Black Ash - Lapps Quay (formerly the 111)

What will this mean for routes with "A" letters? Ie. the Cork Route 8 has an 8 and an 8A, but the back of these buses have three digit digital display screens. Does this mean that information will be lost?

I think it's possible to make the font smaller!

I think this is how e.g. 308A in Limerick is done.

Some buses have started displaying the new route numbers today. Well at least one.

Surely they can come up with more numbers, having a 4 digit display like 207A makes them very small on the display...

Spose it will eliminate confusion between city routes and expressway routes

not as small as you'd think, actually. For some reason i saw a 222 bus saying 222c, it all fits in though.

When I first heard about this, I thought it was odd, but then thinking about it in Cork you have the 8 Expressway service and the 8 city service. That is just plain confusing for a tourist, who sees a stop for the number eight bus, only to realize, actually that is a different number eight bus?

It's not so much of a problem in Dublin as the services are operated by Dublin Bus in the City itself and not by Bus Eireann.

Will Galway be getting renumbered aswell?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,537 ✭✭✭✭Cookie_Monster

what about Dublin, or do they think people will be able to manage the difference between the DB 7 and BE 7 etc?...

Galway regional services are numbered from 416 upwards.

401 to 415 remain free for the city services.
