Doubtful you'll receive either. There's a few categories this could fall into for points, a chart of which you can see here: http://www.rsa.ie/Documents/Licensed%20Drivers/Penalty%20Points%20Chart.pdf

What fell of the trailer anyway and what lane did it end up in? Did you pull over and retrieve the obstruction yourself?

If you feel a load is too or awkward for a trailer to safely carry, look into alternatives such as a closed cargo area in the likes of a van. Have seen an increase in dodgy looking loads on roof racks and trailers recently myself.

Unless a guard actually saw it happen or whatever fell off can be directly traced to you I don't believe anything can happen you. That said I wouldn't be hugely surprised if another driver makes a phone call.

thanks so much for the info.

the trailer had 10 xmas trees in it. the trailer was not over loaded by any means. i clearly underestimated the power of the wind on motorway. it landed on the left hand lane. i decided just to keep going and left an anonymous phone call to motorway services. i thought that it would be too dangerous to walk onto the motorway so just kept going.

Probably should have pulled over. I wouldn't be too jolly if the load came undone and damaged my car.
There are traffic monitoring cameras so just be careful in-case they do decide to find out!

Doesn't matter, no one drives in that lane anyway :pac:

pulling over on a motorway and getting out without reflective gear and flashing beacons etc is not really advisable in most cases. Most people drive far too fast for their level of skill/ability to control a car and even fewer, from what i've seen could be trusted to react safely to "emergency" situations.

OP you should have secured your load better, and maybe phoned the gardai or the toll office or someone to inform them that something had fallen onto the road but you were probably right in the interest of your own safety and the safety of others not to stop, get out and cause even more danger

speaking of which, 2 years ago I nearly hit a Christmas tree on the M4..rang the garda traffic-watch and told them what junction it was at, etc..they were so disinterested I wouldn't bother ringing them again

Would it not have been better to ring 999 or the local Garda Station and report it?

Traffic Watch is based in Castlebar Co Mayo and is answered by civillians who basically listen to people gripes about other road users, compile and forward a report to the local Superintendent where it happened who allocates a Garda to investigate the matter.

    Its not for emergency calls.

Thats news to me  I always assumed it was Garda manned...the sign having the Garda badge, etc.

The sign speaks for itself..Anyway they said they'd look into it, which was all I could do.
