Get a solicitor! Not being smart, but the outcome will be better.

I think they should write off the car in the case you have outlined. Then you could buy the salvage back and fit an engine of your choosing. The car should only be a Cat D write off, and shouldnt cause too many probs for resale/reinsurance.

No difference in price between 08 and 07 sounds like a mickey mouse insurance company , get a loss adjuster to work for you, not a solicitor. why aren't you entitled to a brand new engine from opel ?

If they are fitting a 08 engine then it's not a reconditioned engine, just a secondhand one from a 08 crashed car. Not the same thing at all.

+1 on value of 07 and 08 engine being basically the same. Neither should cost 1000, much less the difference being 1000 euro. However, if it's the 1.4 petrol engine, they are hard enough to get secondhand.

You are getting the run-around from insurance company (but then you had figured that out anyway !).

Why should he be entitled to a brand new engine from Opel? Were Opel responsible for his engine getting damaged by a flood?

I assume poster means new engine supplied by Opel, paid for by insurance company.

I understood insurance companies only used new parts as a rule

I know insurers brought in something about using cheaper spurious parts if the car is over 3 or 4 years old but trying to stick you with a used engine from a breakers (by the sounds of things) is not good enough never mind trying to charge you for it too.

Its not your job to find a used engine, its theirs. As previous poster said, get a loss adjuster to help you, will cost a bit but worth it if you can't solve things yourself.

Loss Adjusters act for Insurers only. Loss Assessors work for the Insured.

You're entitled to be returned to the same financial position as you were pre loss. They are entitled to restore you to a similar engine of similar wear. Asking for a grand however is rich. They HAVE to compensate you. MAKE THEM COMPENSATE YOU.

Tell them to restore you to your previous position as they are contracted too. Don't give them a cent
Ps a loss assessor will take 10% for something you can fight yourself.

sorry your right I meant loss assessor, also when insurance companies see you have employed a loss assessor they sometimes get their back up and become very difficult on things. So probably best to try and sort it on your own.

I'd beg to differ. I personally find Loss Assessors disruptive.... The fact they don't need to be regulated also disturbs me slightly.
