Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Anxiety / Panic

Hi Guys

I started seeing a CBT a few months back for anxiety panic which i had for years but had slowly started getting worse and worse.
At first the price of 100 euro a session seemed fairly steep , but as long as it made it better i didnt really mind.

So im about 7 or 8 sessions in and i still dont feel any better (wasnt hoping for a quick fix , i know it takes time) , and am questioning the value im getting.
My CBT is from Dromin in Louth , nice guy , if any of you know him , fair enough , im not gonna say hes bad at what he does etc , maybe he just does not work for me.

He has more or less made me learn , panic attacks cant hurt you , just wait for them to pass when you get them , thats grand , ive grasped that but i still get them .

And then theres the anxiety which makes me feel like crap most of the time . sore chest and abdomen , cramps , trouble sleeping etc , the usual stuff.

The last few sessions he has more or less giving me hobby advice , go find new hobbys , get out more and stuff , fair enough but 100 euro for an hour of telling me whats a good hobby and not seems odd , i go to him to sort out the panic and anxiety and it seems he thinks ive gotten over that.

Thoughts please

Thanks

You need to raise these issues with him, rather than the internet.

Moved to PI.

Maybe you're just not clicking with this guy.

I've never been to CBT but I know when I went to a GP over a personal issue there was one doctor I requested by name.
Yes all of them have the same training but I just felt comfortable with him

Your guy is probably excellent at his job but maybe you'll do well with someone else. Though the advice I see in your post is common sense tbh, you could have gotten the same info here for free

At least book one session with someone new and see how it goes, you're already spending a tidy sum and you need a result

I know exactly who you are talking about!

As far as im concerned his methods make no sense to me but they have worked for a number of people i know.

To be honest i think you should go again and say exactly what you have said to us here. Tell him straight that its not helping, theres no better man to tell. He wont get angry with you!

I go to CBT once a week, and it's far more detailed than what you are describing. We will normally pick particular incidents that will make me panic and run through every detail of them, why they make me feel bad, what particular aspects of that situation have the greatest impact etc etc.

Then we run through a logical thought progression for each one, it effectively becomes a mantra for that situation and it helps to basically retrain how my brain responds.

I've had great success. Let me put it this way, 2 months ago i couldn't go to the shop and never went outside.

Nowadays i go to the shop everyday, go for a walk every day, have been able to have friends over to my house (something that hadn't happened for 8 months ) and have seen other improvements as well.

I'm not gonna say the guy is bad at what he does...but i was crippled with panic and anxiety and have already had a decent degree of normality return to my life.

Post deleted.

Just a quick reminder to posters that this is PI - a forum to get advice from other posters, it is not appropriate to give or ask for personal recommendations for specific therapists.

Sundy, I've edited your post as such invitations to get into private counsel with posters is not permitted in this forum.

If anyone hasn't already done so, please take the time to read the forum rules in the charter.

Many thanks.
