Keane or Dunner - who "single handedly" got us to Euro 2012?

Just curious. You know the way everyone says Roy Keane dragged Ireland kicking and screaming to WC 2002? In the future will they say about Euro 2012 that it was Robbie Keane or Richard Dunne that done it? (or maybe they all did in equal measure):D

I think Dunner sneaks it for me as the key man with that extraordinary performance in Russia.:D

    Both equally as important...

Why do we need someone to have 'single-handedly' done it for us?

It's a squad game - lots of players made a contribution.

    Neither as important as.......

It's rare that Mr. A, flah and myself all agree. But Von Trap was the man.

    Hardly Robbie
What about that pen miss v Slovakia away
And the sitter of a header that came off his sholdour at home to Slovakia ?

    It was a "team" achievement
Include John Delaney and Denis O'Brien
    In that team
    Well done all!

    Both had a big role.

We can't forget this lad who finished off Doyle's terrific backpass across the goal for Ireland's opener and maybe the eventual difference between Ireland being seeded and unseeded.

    V. Aleksanyan. Looks nearly like he was turning to run and celebrate in this still, doesn't it?

Also, Keith Fahey for his winning goal in Yerevan. A crucial result.

Richard Dunne said to the trainer "Put on more Russians". The trainer said "There are no more".

when you have to ask between 2 players it obviously means no one player dragged Ireland there.

also, how does one player 'shade' being the one single handedly doing it?

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 7,943 Mod ✭✭✭✭Yakult

Theirs no 'I' in team. Without effort from all players, we would not have got through.

    No Paul McShane option?

They recovered it as far as I know!

Definitely a team job though. Average players at club level such as St Ledger, Andrews and Whelan performed brilliantly and were just as important as Keano and Dunne!

Neither single handidly got us there

But take away Dunne from the team and I don't think we'd have qualified!

More important than Keane for me in the current Irish squad!

Cant believe no-one mentioned given!!
without him between the sticks we'd be F'd
Saying that though Dunne has bailed him out on numerous occasions :) So ill pick dunne :D
Duff was also instrumental may i add :)

As class as Dunne and Given were, they did not drag a team into a tournament like the way Roy Keane did to the 2002 WC...

Wouldn't the trainer have said, "I haven't got the authority to do that. Besides, the maximum number of players an association football team can field, according to the laws of the game, is eleven. Hold still while I draw this number on your back."?

Credit has to go to Trapattoni for moulding a team of mainly average players into an effective unit that always competes for everything with a tremendous work ethic. We're not the easiest on the eye but we don't have the players to play nice football, considering our defence is basically Dunne and three journeymen our recent defensive record is something to be proud of and our team is built on the fact that by not conceding we are always giving ouselves at least a chance of winning.

Neither, single-handedly - it was a team effort.

With the limited individual quality and the system consequently applied there are probably not many teams around where the answer could be more obvious and the question less sensical than in Irelands case.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,775 ✭✭✭✭kfallon

No one player dragged us to the finals but in years to come they will talk about the "Miracle of Moscow"!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,729 ✭✭✭Speak Now

How important was that draw in Moscow, table wise it made no difference in the end but but psychologically did it give the team more belief?

Paul McShane also made a vital contribution by not spending a minute on the pitch during the 12 games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,318 ✭✭✭The Chessplayer

As regards 2002 Roy Keane most certainly did not drag us there single-handedly as was proven by the team's performance after he went home (due to the fact that there wasn't enough bibs in training).

It's a pity Roy couldn't drag us into the finals in 96, 98, 2000 and 2006 when he was also involved in those failed campaigns.

And the way the Irish team collapsed in the finals in 2002 without him around was so pronounced. Oh that's right, they did just as well without him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,988 ✭✭✭Bondvillain

No one single handedly got us there. It wasnt that kind of campaign.
Being there is mostly down to Trap, but Armenian Manager Vardan Minasyan hand a considerable hand in things.

Good man Vardy. Thanks very much for organizing your lads into hockying the Slovaks home and away, letting us off the hook for only getting 2 points off them instead of 6.

Doubtful. An Ireland team with Keane playing and no internal disputes in 2002 should have been pushing for a place in the final at the very least. Weakest WC ever.

I think Ireland could have made it further in that WC with Keane but it's all ifs and buts. Sad that it's what he's arguably best remembered for, though.

But there is e and m for "me"!

There were a telling few moments in the '02 qualifiers where Roy clearly lifted the team and got results. There were othet outstanding performances by other individuals deserving of mention as well.

This campaign produced different heroes in various games. It can be classed more of a collective effort.

A lot of important performances over the group phase

Critical to qualifying were the off field performances of
    Trap
    Delaney
    And Denis O'Brien
