US Admits Defeat Over $1.2trn Deficit Cuts

A 'super committee' of US politicians has failed to reach a deal on how to slash $1.2trn (£760bn) from America's deficit.

The panel had been tasked with trying to get to grips with the country's growing mountain of debt.

The politicians had until tonight to come up with a solution but were unable to strike a deal.

Democrat Senator Patty Murray and Representative Jeb Hensarling, a Republican, said despite "intense deliberations" the members of the panel were unable "to bridge the committee's significant differences."

The committee was established to cut at least $1.2trn from the budget over 10 years.

But the panel has been divided from the beginning over taxes and cuts to popular government social benefit programmes.

Yeah, Newt Gringrich has some colourful and spot on comments regarding the supercommittee a couple weeks ago. I'm liking Newt more and more in the GOP race.

Also take a look at the comments for some more historical info on Newt's feelings about the supercommittee.

Agree with Newt re supercomittee, his making children work policies put me off him. As does his gross hypocrisy.

Newts nice now, but wait until he starts saying relatively sane things about immigration or fiscal responsibility. Then you'll be on the hunt again for another meat eating, deer shooting, backslapping, quasi racist ideological conservative.

I don't think there's any fear of that. Newt recently came out and stated that he wants to abolish child labour laws.

Anyway the OWS can take credit for this debt bill collapse. The Republicans put their "scrap Madicare and SS" in it and he knew that if he went for it the OWS would have crucified him. It was a non-starter from the non-start.

I find it laughable that people think Occupy Wall Street is even remotely influential in national politics. Its nowhere near as powerful as the tea party movement. Delude yourself all you want but that is reality.

Maybe if they didn't spend 2-3 trillion in Iraq and Afgan they might not be too bad.
