Uninstalled gas fire/Difficulty finding grate

We have just uninstalled a gas fire in one of our rooms and were told we could light a fire straight away. The back is cast iron and now people are saying that we can't light a fire with a cast iron back as it will crack (gas company said it would be fine). Also, we are finding it impossible to find a grate to fit and it looks like we wont be able to light a fire for Christmas. Can anyone tell me of a place that would sell a large range of grates in the leinster region and has anyone else lit a fire in a fireplace with a cast iron back.

Make a cardboard template of the inset and take it to a good builders suppliers.

Thanks for that and is it okay to light a fire with a cast iron back ?

If the Gas Company said its fine I would think so, it`s unlikely the gas fire would be fitted to an unfilled inset. Give the insert a couple of taps to see if it sounds hollow.
