Oil pump would be the first thing that comes to mind.

Thats what my dad though. I took the timing belt cover off to find the belt ripped to shreads. Was not even 50000 on the belt so fairly sickened.

50k on the belt? I would have thought 45k (miles) would be enough...

Did a broken water pump or tensioner take out the belt?

Either way, you might be in luck, this engine might be a non-interference engine (anyone here know?). If so it'll reduce the cost of repair big-time.

Is it the 4EFE? They are non interference.

The engine will be fine, Find what caused the belt to break and fix that.
Fit a new T-belt and you will be away again!

Yes its it 4efe. Sorry i dont understand what you mean by non interferance?? I spoke to a couple of guys and when i told them what happened they said i could prob of damaged the valves or pistions. My father said it 2 as he has experaince form workin in a dealership for years. Ive picked up a second hand engine for 250. And i guna change the timing belt on that and il do the clutch too. Il strip the other engine down and find out what caused the problem.

Means that nothing will have got smashed up inside the engine. Just needs a new belt and timing set. Should find out what caused the belt to go as per above (tensioner/pump etc) and get that sorted too.

Interference means if the t-belt breaks then the pistons can hit the valves.
Non-interference means that if the belt breaks then no damage usually results.
I wouldn't buy another engine just yet, there's no need yet as your one should be fine.

i have gotten it already just to be on safe side when i have the engine out il go over it and if it turns out to be sound il sell it on as there only 100k on it. it just seemed like the simpleir option haha. if the machinics had told about the non interferance thing i wouldn't have bothered.

The 4A-FE engines are non interference.

The 4E-FE is an interference engine.

    A 99 corolla uses the 4E engine.

We didn bother changing the engine coz ut turned out no damage was done. We reckon the belt snapped due to age. But i need a new engine pulley for the altenator belt as its damaged.

How did you check that no damage was done? Have you started the engine?

i dont know about luck haha. if she was an interferance engine i reckon it shoud be f**ked cause we tried starting loads of times before realiseing what was wrong. engine is running sound now just need a pulley though

we changed the timing belt. then we took out the spark plugs and did a compression test. once we were happy with that we put the plugs back in and started it then. was perfect.

If it drives properly with no power issues or flat spots then you've been very blessed.

well guy that did it seemed to know his stuff reali well. saved my mother having to get a altenator for a cilo. they wanted 500 euro to fix it. when all it was, was the tensioner. all i need now is to get my hands on one of these

I always thought they were non-interference too until a couple of months ago when we had one break and I checked the auto data book. There was no damage done though.

Autodata says it is......I've seen one or two things that Autodata had wrong though so possibly...

It doesn't take much to make a non-interference engine into an interference one.
Small carbon deposits can cause the valves to contact the piston.

It looks like the crank shaft pulley.

What size is the pulley? There are a couple of different sizes IIRC.
