Is their a quicker way to create a course for the garmin 500 then clicking on your route bit by bit on the google map in garmin connect?

Never tried it. You could search for routes similar to the one you want on Garmin connect or Strava and copy them across or you could cycle the route and your Garmin will log it

Strava is better in some parts than Garmin, try both and see which one you prefer - or use both. I copied a route off of Strave for the first time on my 500 yesterday and it worked a treat. Took me a while to figure out what I was doing once it was in there, but I didn't read the instructions or start at the beginning of the course, but it is quite simple. The only thing I had to do was change the copied file from xxxx.gpx.htm (I think) to xxxx.gpx.. ie just delete the last part so the ending is .gpx

Grand job, going to try it now with strava, garmin is good too, but doing a course by clicking the route on the map is bit tedious though. I was looking to do it for areas/roads i dont know etc.

I've used bike route toaster and ridewithgps to map and transfer routes onto my garmin after importing them to training centre. It's a bit unwieldy but works. Also, some courses seem to cause the garmin to freeze if they are particularly long. My best advice is try and find your route in garmin connect and then copy it. Strava may be fine as others have said

I've only done the one route this way and it was from Strava, but was quite painless (unlike the ride!). Didn't have any issues with my Garmin freezing and the route was 60Km. I did start, and end off of the course so it took me a while to figure out what I was looking at on the screen, but once I was on course it was all grand.
I might look into those other sites to see if they might be of use as I'm in a new area myself
